Dallas version of my unpopular trade for Denver. I believe I will get a positive reaction this time.

Miami in: 2028 Heat second
Miami out: Caleb Martin (S&T)

Dallas in: Caleb Martin
Dallas out: 2024 Celtics, 2026 Mavs and 2028 Heat seconds and THJ

Washington in: 2024 Celtics and 2026 Mavs seconds, THJ
Washington out: -

Why for Miami: Instead of sending your player away for free like last summer's Strus trade, get a second.

Why for Dallas: Getting a two-way wing defender.

Why for Washington: Have tons of salary space and use it with a little incentive.

Dont see the point for mavs. If they get washington to take thj without sending anything back they use that money to resign DJJ. Even better to just send him to toronto for their 2nd back. Cant see mavs doing stuff that limits their ability to resign DJJ

Washington can’t take back THJ without sending money out. Which makes it mostly impossible in this type of trade.

Sub them out for Toronto to fix that issue. Probably needs to be the Toronto 2nd instead of the Celtic 2nd. Since the Celtic 2nd is most likely never going to play in NBA and the trade happens after the draft?

But there’s no way Martin opts in right? So is this a sign and trade? Where Dallas hard caps themselves for Martin? Instead of just keeping their DJJ?

Seems unlikely. If he opts in, this is a no brainer for Dallas. If it’s a sign and trade around the MLE, below THJ’s salary? Meh. After DJJ signs in Detroit, probably not a bad option for Dallas really.

Those are two really late draft picks.

In February, the Wizards spent $12M in cap room to absorb Marvin Bagley and got one really good 2025 SRP (likely to be in the 31-35 range) plus one decent 2026 SRP pick (likely to be in the 40-50 range). And the player they got, Bagley, is still young with a high lotto pedigree who at least has a theoretical chance of a redemption arc.

I don't see the Wizards paying $16M for 32-year-old vet and two SRP's, one being the #60 pick and the other projecting to be in the 52-60 range. Picks that low are barely better than camp invites.

There is no way the Wizards do this. Those picks are borderline non-existent.

TOR 2nd has to be included here imo. you might or might not get a team to bite on the 37th pick next year to eat THJ's remaining 1yr $16M. That Boston pick is worthless.

If we swap Boston and Toronto's picks, will this be a deal?

I think the Raptors and Mavs' picks are enough for an expiring contract. Detroit may have overpaid, but I don't put much value in an expiring contract and I guess Bagley didn't have an expiring contract when he was traded.

I like this playoff run for DJJ, but would I take him over Caleb Martin? No. Don't forget that Caleb lost the player of the east award last season by 1 vote. He was even good in this Celtics series too.

I think the price is about right (a $16M expiring contract for one good SRP and one bad SRP), but I don't think the Wizards have quite enough cap room to absorb that salary. They have a substantial cap hold for their 2024 FRP that has to be factored into their cap room. Even if they let Tyus Jones and Landry Shamet walk in free agency, I don't think they can swing it.

And I agree with Mavs commenters that if Dallas could dump THJ's contract like this, they'd probably just try and resign Jones themselves rather than trade for Martin.

There should be an asterisk next to any deal done by Troy Weaver though. He gets swindled.
