The Jazz entered the 2023 NBA draft really wanting Bilal Coulibaly and they... did not get him.

They settled for Taylor Hendricks after debating whether or not to pick Keyonte George at 9th and then immediately said that they ranked Taylor Hendricks below every single player drafted in the top 8 (a bizarre statement).

Hendricks is a very good shooter with elite size and lateral quickness. He has high level defensive upside, but is not close to a good defender yet. He has limited overall upside due to his below average strength, explosion, and ball handling. He did not have a good rookie year at all, struggling badly in the G League while putting in 0 effort, but looked OK after being called up during the tank.

He has a shot to be Jaden McDaniels with a 40% three point shot, but this is years away, and not certain at all. He's 20.5 years old so he's extremely young still. The Jazz may want to win now (and Hendricks is so raw on defense that he would not help them win now) and never liked Hendricks so they would probably trade him if they get value back. What would the former 9th overall pick get back?

From the Kings i'd offer -

Barnes + Huerter + 13

for

John Collins + Hendricks

Kings get what I've talked myself into as a good fit next to Sabonis. But we also get another young guy we can develop to hopefully slide in long term when Collins contract is up.

Jazz probably need to start competing at some point. They get a few vets guy who fit in/add shooting, and get another shot at a late lotto pick to grab someone they like better.

I think a team Toronto at #19 makes sense as a longer-term play.

Maybe a bigger deal where Portland cuts salary.

And yet with all of that, Hendricks was the jazz best rookie; the keeper of the three. I'd be interested to know Keyonte George's trade value.

I hate this for Houston. They can get a much higher ceiling prospect at #3 than anything they receive here.

Maybe they want to punt on the higher ceiling guys like Cody Williams or Rob Dillingham but seems like Houston should try to hit on a higher ceiling guy or trade for quality over quantity with their depth.

What? Who is the high ceiling guy available at 3 that is so different from whomever is there at 10? For the record, I think thereś a pretty high chance Dillingham or Cody Williams is available at 10, and I wouldn't be surprised if BOTH of them were (or Holland, etc). Getting Kessler and Hendricks to go along with 10 sounds like very good value in return for 3. If Houston wouldn't do this, I probably would for the Spurs, say 4 + 35 + filler for 10 + Kessler + Hendricks. Get Kessler to take over the non Wemby minutes, Hendricks to back up Sochan, and still pick up 2 good prospects at 8 and 10 (Dillingham, Sheppard, Buzelis, Cody Williams, Holland, Knecht, Devin Carter, McCain... a bunch of those will be available). Sounds like a steal to me.

Sheppard, McCain, and Topic are the only realistic high ceiling guys in the draft. If the Jazz traded up here, it would obviously be for Sheppard. I do think McCain and Topic will be available at 10 though.

(I don't think the Jazz would have any interest in Topic)

The Jazz are probably looking to draft one of Cody Williams, Kyshawn George, Zach Edey, or Matas Buzelis if they stay at 10 and none of those guys are likely to be contributors in the NBA.

I personally don’t think any of these are close. I think Hendricks would be in contention for #1 in this draft.

I like this.
Hendricks is an interesting prospect. He is going to take a bit of time, but the pay off might be worth it and could develop into that great fit next to Sabonis.

Anyway, the #3 for Kessler and Hendricks and #10 trade is... exactly the wrong direction for what we would be looking for if we traded Hendricks...

Sheppard is extremely raw and unready for the NBA. His upside comes if he learns how to dribble and he's VERY far from learning howto dribble. He's 3-4 years away and we would be trading Hendricks to win now.

Kessler to Houston is also bizarre. Kessler can't play with Sengun or Amen (and those two guys can't play with each other...) so..... Where would the minutes come from?

Basically, like, could the Jazz get a good 7th man or an overpaid #4 guy or something for Hendricks if they were trying to win now?

I'm not saying Hendricks has excelled; I just think this draft is, well... really bad. Hendricks looks to have a floor as a quality role player; I'm not sure the floors of many of the prospects being discussed at #1 are as high, nor are their ceilings. I actually think every pick from #9 (maybe even lower) up would have been in the discussion for #1 if they were in this draft.

Risacher is going #1 and he's the same archetype as Hendricks and worse on offense and has much lower defensive potential.

But Risacher has much better defense as of now.
