Portland trades up for Clingan with Houston

Draft Express says portland could be interested in trading up for clingan along with a few other teams and Houston may want to trade down for win now talent.
Houston sends: Tate, Green, Landale, 3
Portland sends: Simons, 7
Followed by tate getting dumped to a team that ends FA with their room/MLE open to absorb him.
Portland ducks tax, moves up, refreshes their $8.8M TPE into a similarly sized one (by taking landale into a tpe)
Houston moves back and gets a guy who can either be a combo sixth man or their starting SG depending on how Green looks next year

You have Green included in the trade to Portland...
I'm meh on this trade as a whole.
If Sarr or Risacher were available at #3, yes - I'd do the deal. The rest of the field, no... not doing this trade.

I would do this for Sarr or Risacher - who I now think are pretty clear cut the top-2 in this draft w/ a decent drop off after. I actually love this move if either of those guys are avaliable.
But for sure wouldnt do this for Clingan.

This would be a viable trade if Washington picks Clingan over Sarr at 2

PRetty sure he is trading Jeff Green, not Jalen Green. Because man this deal gets crazy lopsided for Portland otherwise, no?

Also wonder if Portland has to get this high. For instance is Clingan there at 5? Now Simons/7 for 5/something is better right? They don't have to take back unwanted filler. And if Detroit isn't in on Clingan, then they only risk one player coming off their board while adding Simons who fits next to Cade pretty nicely.
I get guaranteeing you get your guy by going higher. Just not sure they have to get that high?

i think OP is saying if they dont do it another team might trade with Houston to draft Clingan (?memphis)

I think this deal could be super ideal for both teams if Risacher is there at 3 - HOU gets Simons as their super-6th man and could likely still get Clingan at 7 IMO.
1 ATL - Sarr
2 WAS - Castle
3 PDX (Via HOU) - Riascher
4 SAS - Topic
5 DET - Matas
6 CHA - Dalton
7 HOU (Via PDX) - Clingon
Could see that play out (w/ CHA potentially going Holland or Williams instead). HOU ends up w/
G - Fred VanVleet / Anfernee Simons
G - Jalen Green / Anfernee Simons / Cam Whitmore
F - Dillon Brooks / Amen Thompson / Cam Whitmore
F - Jabari Smith JR / Tari Eason / Alpern Sengun
C - Alpern Sengun / Donovan Clingan / Steven Adams

I think Houston wants to be free agent players next offseason, so I don't see them trading for Simons.
Maybe 7 + 14

Yeah I got that. I still have trouble seeing a bidding war to get to 3 to take Clingan though.

1. The money works with just Landale and Jeff Green, which gives Portland an $8.2 M TPE and more space under the tax.
2. If Sarr or Risacher is still there at 3, the Rockets likely keep the pick and take them instead.

Memphis should love to get Clingan, just like POR. So, what is the price - #3 for #8 and what - maybe MEM 2025 1st top 4 protected seems fair.
What can POR do to top it?
#3 for #14, 2029 MIL 1st (and/or 2029 BOS 1st).
- might be too much but I would do that in a minute. Risk is the pick in 2029 is bad, but potential is worth the risk.

We shouldn’t. Clingan is just not our guy.

I really love Clingan for Portland. I think he'd make life easier for them defensively and could be good in the PnR with Scoot. Plus it gives them a reason to move Ayton to the bench where he belongs.

Makes you wonder if they are moving Ayton. Then again, rumors and are sometimes just rumors.

I really don't see it for Memphis. I think if Clingan is there at 9 he would be just one of few guys we consider but might select him based on need. Non-shooting defensive drop centers are not worth tying up future picks for. If Memphis had landed at 3 I would be looking to trade down or just taking Sheppard.

Likely just moves RWill for expiring/TPE + 2nd. Ayton is a hard sell and Clingan can still get 20 minutes behind him for a season or two until Ayton can be moved or expires.

Not the first time that has happened.

maybe not memphis.
But, POR should look at a deal where they get #3 and keep #7 - even at the cost of one or both of those future picks.
Clingan and Buzelis (or Holland/Knecht/CWill/etc.) would give them some solid prospects to develop.
veterans: Brogdon, Simons, Grant, RWill, Ayton
prospects: Scoot, Sharpe, Murray - add Clingan and one of KnechtBuzelis/Cwill and have guys developing at every position.
