With in principle a drop in talent outside the top 2 and without any clear need that makes them better, they go down a bit in search of a guy like Knech who is ready to win now

This is light for Houston.

Value is about right, but light by historical standards. I got Clingan #8 on my board, imo he would be a terrible pick at #3 for any team. I don't think he is worth trading up for, at the end of the day he is a drop center that likely cannot shot and will be benched in the 4th if he landed in Memphis. If we were to do this trade it would be for a guy like Sheppard, but we really don't need him either so I don't see the motivation of tying up a future pick. AS of right now I think there is close a 50+% Clingan is there anyways at 9 if we even want him. I honestly rather trade down and take a shot at Ware and get another asset, at least if Ware hits his ceiling he is a 4th quarter player.

If Memphis had landed at #3 I would be trying to trade down as well.

If Rockets want someone in particular at 3 it's probably best they stay put, otherwise this is something to consider.
Maybe I´d ask for lighter protections in case things don't look too well for Grizzlies by mid season and the thought of tanking crosses their mind.

This is not your first rodeo..... do you really think this is true? I would say it is more likely just the typical trade noise we see every year and since Houston is rumored to want to trade out/down you are giving it more credence this year.

This is not your first rodeo..... do you really think this is true? I would say it is more likely just the typical trade noise we see every year and since Houston is rumored to want to trade out/down you are giving it more credence this year.

I'm not talking about the trade stuff, that sounds more like typical slop, but everyone has been saying Clingan is firmly in top 3 talk since the combine and he's getting mocked to Houston despite having Sengun in some places, teams really like him

Teams will probably bet Houston and SA pass on him instead of trading up but it seems like he's seen as a top 3 guy this year by a lot of teams

I think it just a lazy narrative. Since none of the prospects are really shining through the safest one is just getting mocked higher and really picks 3-9 are more interchangeable than in most modern drafts. But rarely do teams at the top of the lottery take the safe prospect with a limited ceiling. At the end of the day Clingan's most likely outcome is an average center...a better Poeltl 10-15 type of center. If he could guard in space or had an established outside shot I could see the argument to draft him that high, but those are just not realistic expectations for him.

Even his combine was not the greatest, he measure as expected and hit some 3s in a open gym. But his lane agility which was touted as a strength of his actually measured poorly. I think objectively he is a borderline top 10 pick.

#3 for Vince Williams Jr + #9 is interesting to me

Lower the protections to top 4 and i think its a decent deal. West is competitive enough for Houston to bet on Memphis missing it again. As is, i think its kinda light and the Rox should just take Clingan if these are the offers available. Dude will likely give them a good 20+min/game right out the bat

Houston would be wise to stay at 3 and take Topic. Let FVV season him.

Do you really think kchile is a guy who buys into narratives just because he thinks they might benefit Houston? I've never gotten that sense from him.

The draft is about players, not picks. Clingan has the profile of a typical center than goes 10-15+ in most draft. For example if Clingan was in last year's draft I am still taking Lively over him who was drafted at 12. He might be slightly better coming out than Mark Williams who was taken 15 or Kessler at 22 the year before. I don't have him anywhere close to the top of this even this "bad" draft and anyone who does is grossly over ranking the skillset. If it wasn't for need he wouldn't even be in my Memphis top 10 if we are just looking at BPA.

So yes anyone who really thinks he is worthy of #3 pick, or exhausting a future 1st to trade up for him is drinking too much of the hype Kool-Aid and giving credence to the wrong experts. IF Clingan was on another non-national championship team he would be mocked in the mid teens, just like he was months ago because his skillset if not top of the lottery worthy regardless of team success. And if Memphis does a trade like this I will be the 1st to criticize it and give ourselves a "F" for a draft grade.

IDK that just sounds like a difference of opinion on how teams view one player, nothing to suggest his opinion is based on wanting what's best for Houston and thus intentionally reading into it.

He's talked about Clingan high before in threads with nothing to do with Houston.
