I want to do a Lauri trade -- to NY with Detroit
Detroit trades: Stewart
Detroit gets: Randle
New York trades: Randle/#24/25 Better of NYK/MIL 1st(MIL top 4 protected), 26 NYK 1st unp/28 NYK 1st unp
New York gets: Markannen/Stewart
Utah trades: Makannen
Utah gets: #24/25 Better of NYK/MIL 1st(MIL top 4 protected), 26 NYK 1st unp/28 NYK 1st unp
Detroit upgrades their talent while only using $15M of their cap space.
New York swaps Randle for Lauri and replaces Hartenstein with Stewart (if they can somehow keep him, then they deal Robinson) and really go for it. Keeps their later 1st this year to add in a guy who can hopefully be a cheap contributor because they will need it with OG, Brunson, and Lauri all getting way more expensive. But big markets should pay for contending teams.
Utah gets a late 1st and 3 unprotected future 1sts for Lauri along with no salary. I know there is no gtd premium asset here, but this is an Ainge package--get more unprotected picks.

I don't think Utah really wants anymore picks in this draft. They already have 10, 29, and 32. What is 24 & 25 really doing for them. I think they could get a massive haul for Lauri, but would want such a haul for future drafts and not this one.

yeah 24 is hardly the main value here. I did want to give them immediate return and since they took back no player, the roster spot is right there. They can refuse it of course, but that seems silly. The value is getting 3 unprotected picks in 4 years.

What about a swap in 29 instead of another pick in 24? Seems like it would tickle Danny’s fancy to have another high upside shot instead of a late pick?

Interesting proposal. From a Detroit perspective, I’m torn which probably means it’s a fair trade in terms of value.
So two years of a 30 year old Randle at $30M per, or a 23 year old Stewart at $15M for 4 years? I think I would have to keep Stewart. He has improved his 3pt shooting every year and I would hope that continues.

All negotiable of course. That doesn't feel like an unreasonable ask to me though.

Yeah I originally conceived of it without Stewart and Detroit sending some other minor value back to New York, but thought the Knicks could use Stewart and that also saves more cap space for Detroit. But might could be done without him for sure.

Re: I want to do a Lauri trade -- to NY with Detroit
Love it for Detroit. Randle has his flaws, but he's a legit NBA player who's deserved to make a couple of all-star teams, so acquiring him for a decent-but-slightly-overpaid backup big and cap space sounds like larceny.
Stewart could fit well in NYK. Not sure if his decent 3pt% is repeatable or just a one-season blip, but Stewart's D is legit, and I think Thibs would play him. He'd be in Achiuwa's role however, so I imagine if NYK takes Beef Stew that NYK is letting Achiuwa walk, and maybe lost Hartenstein as well. Dollar for dollar, I'd probably take Beef Stew over Achiuwa, but it's close -- so I'd rather have Achiuwa at a below-NLTMLE salary than Stewart at $15M.
I think for NYK the timing might be suspect: it would probably need to be a post-draft trade in July. NYK should figure out what they can/will do with their FA bigs (Hartenstein and Achiuwa) before spending any money/assets on Beef Stew.

I mean for the Knicks the big thing is Markannen. And while Utah might well just take Randle leaving no need for the Pistons I thought it added value to both Utah and Detroit by including them. Detroit gets a needed talent influx and Utah can start the rebuild a year faster/tank harder.
But obviously the pick this year is basically inconsequential to this deal so it could definitely wait until July 1st--assuming Detroit hasn't immediately reached deals with free agents killing off their space.

Weaver is gone, and hopefully the use-cap-space-on-unplayable-vets thing (like last year's trade for Joe Harris) is in the rear view mirror

Re: I want to do a Lauri trade -- to NY with Detroit
If I'm NY I'm not trading Randle & 5 1st for Markkanen & Stewart. Some how in this DET gets Randle for a back up big.
Looking at Randle and Markkanen career numbers it seem the pick are going the wrong way.
Randle
3× NBA All-Star (2021, 2023, 2024)
2x All NBA(2021 & 2023)
NBA Most Improved Player (2021)
Markkanen
NBA All-Star (2023)
NBA Most Improved Player (2023)
NBA All-Rookie First Team (2018)
One of these is a 2x All NBA and the other is a career loser.

Assuming that this is pick #24 in this draft plus the better of MIL/NYK in 2025 (the wording was a bit confusing), then this looks like a solid proposal all around.

I count 5 1st
It's NY trading
2024 pick 24
2024 pick 25
25 Better of NYK/MIL 1st(MIL top 4 protected)
26 NYK 1st unp
28 NYK 1st unp

Re: I want to do a Lauri trade -- to NY with Detroit
Pick 25 is not in the deal which becomes obvious if you read my reasoning where I say the Knicks keep a late 1st to add a cheap contributor.
You can still hate the deal, but its only 4 1sts, with one of them very late.

Why oh why is an expiring Lauri worth so much? In some ways he'd be an upgrade over Randle sure (youth, shooting etc.) but in other ways he's a downgrade (playmaking and rebounding). Plus Randle was a main guy on a playoff team. Lauri has been the main guy of a lotto team in a low stress environment. There is no guarantee his progression will continue playing meaningful games in hyper difficult NYC sports market.
I could understand the overall concept of the deal but its far too expensive in my eyes. Far too expensive.
Why rely on nuance, facts and logic when you can bludgeon the other side with mindless repetition of "Duuur McDaniel's has potential
and still be treated as if you were reasonable.
