Pistons trade: Stewart
Pistons get: Herro

Nets trade: DFS/#27 PHI 1st (top 6)
Nets get: #15

Nets combine a couple things to get a pick now, also save immediate money now and more importantly for big 25 free agency plans.

Pistons use up again just a bit of their space but get an offensive player who should fit nicely next to Cade

Heat brought in Rozier, he can take the Herro role and now they add in a couple of nice players with size which is a need and swap a current pick for a future pick which should help when they inevitably go star hunting again.

I’ve been thinking more of an Ivey for Herro, Pistons getting a better, more experienced player and Miami getting a potential Herro replacement and cap relief.

I’d do it. Stew is a nice player who doesn’t fit our team. Herro is a much better player albeit on a bigger salary.

Agree for Detroit, I'd rather do Ivey for Herro. But for Miami, I don't think I could see it unless they are moving on from Butler and rebuilding.

OTOH, this OP of Stewart for Herro makes some sense for Miami, and agree we'd take it

At the risk of hijacking/overcomplicating, how does this deal work for Detroit?

Detroit has eaten contracts from Nets before, though obviously there are now some FO changes, but they get a pick for their troubles here and convert Stewart/cap space into a big expiring.

Herro gives the Nets shooting/scoring from the bench, he's not a great fit with Cam Thomas, but it gives the Nets more flexibility to trade Cam Thomas potentially as part of a deal for a lead guard like Mitchell/Trae/Garland.

I don't think Detroit would effectively trade Herro for Ben Simmons and a 2nd round pick. That effectively becomes dumping Stewart for a 2nd rounder while also eating into their cap space this year.

What am I missing for why Detroit considers that? Or why the Nets get to turn Simmons into Herro for a 2nd round pick?

Depends on how the Herro contract is viewed, for the most part when he was on market last summer it was considered neutral or even a bit under water. I'm not sure Stewart's contract is viewed much differently, which is why a swap seemed reasonable.

A big expiring could be viewed as a positive or negative relative to paying either of those guys for 3 more seasons.

I mean, I love this for Miami. Breaking Herro into smaller pieces helps, getting a guy like DFS helps, and getting that Philly pick is gigantic.

The original deal helps the Nets clear space for free agency next year.

Zero chance we trade a usable player like Stew for Ben Simmons for anything less than a high level asset. A second rounder isn't it. You're not missing anything. We would not consider it.

Is PHI27 enough of an asset to get? That piece to Miami along with DFS/Stew feels a bit rich to me, maybe that pick goes to DET and the 2nd (or multiple) go to the Heat?

Lauri ok, but depending on how much Ingram gets not sure. And having Herro doesn't end the world for either of those pursuits. S&T is more likely than pure cap space signings with or without him. I'd very much doubt their plan A is expirings creating cap space for a max signing with Bridges/CamJ/Claxton/cap holds all on books.

Claxton has to be resigned this year if the Nets will keep him.

DFS and Cam will have to go by next year's trade deadline to clear cap space.

Sharpe may also have to go if Claxton and Clowney are the future big men.
