OKC / WAS / PDX - Coffers opened for Deni

Post#1 » by BlazersBroncos » Wed Jun 5, 2024 3:02 pm

OKC OUT - Giddey, Dieng, 12, 2025 MIA FRP, 2025 OKC FRP, 2 future SRP
OKC IN - Avdija, Walker, 40

PDX OUT - Walker, 7, 40
PDX IN - Dieng, 12, lower of 2025 MIA or OKC FRP, 2 future SRP

WAS OUT - Avdija
WAS IN - Giddey, 7, higher of 2025 MIA or OKC FRP

OKC opens the coffers for Deni, a ideal fit on the court and on the balance sheet - as he is absurdly cheap and which would be huge when the money man comes a knocking. Use some remaining cap space to sign Val as an enforcer. Walker low key is a nice 3rd string PF/C who is a tremendous rebounder and could be a legit rotation guy if he can iron out his 3.

G - Shai Gilgeous-Alexander / Cason Wallace
G - Lou Dort / Isaiah Joe / Aaron Wiggins
F - Jalen Williams / Aaron Wiggins / Baylor Schierman (40)
F - Deni Avdija / Kenrich Williams / Jabari Walker JR
C - Chet Holmgren / Jonas Valančiūnas (FA) / Jaylin Williams

PDX decides to do a minor punt and take a swing on Dieng while moving down and snagging another FRP. They likely follow this up w/ trading a vet or two so I wont bother w/ a depth chart.I think they chart whomever of the F is falling at 12 (Matas, Holland, Williams, Salaun) and take Edey or Missi at 14.

WAS gets a kings ransom for Deni - they kick the tires on Giddey, can use 7 on their PGOTF or COTF (As the take Riascher 2 here) and get another swing at a FRP in 2025. IMO they follow this up w/ a Kuzma deal.

G - Jordan Poole / [Kuzma Trade]
G - Bilal Couldibay / Landry Shamet / Johnny Davis
F - Zaccharie Riascher (2) / Corey Kispert
F - Josh Giddey / Patrick Baldwin JR
C - Donovan Clingan (7) / Marvin Bagley JR / Tristan Vukcevic

if i'm washington i probably just take OKC deal straight up. I dont think clingan makes it to 7 and bunch of PG prospects will be available at 12 still

The PDX aspect would be predicated on Clingan being there at 7.

Not interested from the Wizards POV. To me, this is all predicated on the 2025 pick. Is Miami going to be awful? Probability says they'll be picking in the teens. This year's #7 is eqivalent to a teens pick in a good draft. So it's Giddey (who's up for a massive extension soon) and two teens-value picks for Deni, and that's a hard pass for me.

Any offer for Deni has to be really compelling. A 6'9 player that can guard 1-4 adequately, while giving you 15/7/4 on good averages doesn't grow on trees. Mediocre picks and players with clear holes in their game just doesn't do it for me.

Huge overpay for Deni. I sure hope he gets traded so we can all learn a lesson about how not to value role players with less than one year of very low volume shooting percentages. He's not worth more than the #1 pick. He's not worth more than Mikal Bridges. He's not worth more than this package.

LOL your desperation in proving that you're right concerning Deni is so weird. Anyway, he's not getting traded...Washington's front office already said just as much. And no, this isn't a huge overpay...get real.

Does feel like an overpay for Deni to me.

In another thread we were just discussing OKC/WAS deal for Deni. The concept makes sense but the assessment of value between WAS and OKC seems too far off.

My argument is; last year Jrue Holiday was acquired for Brogdon, Williams, and 2 FRP. Deni had a nice year and is on a great contract. But I’m not sure what Deni has done that would warrant a cost more than Jrue.

I'm a desperate housewife. Let me live my life.....

And its absolutely a huge overpay. None of you can name one role player with such a limited track record that ever returned the #1 overall pick plus. Or a young player of similar ability, a mid lotto pick, and a future 1st with two shots at being good.

At some point track records matter. He is a role player. A fine one. But if his shooting reverts to career norms instead of being the new reality (and on those attempts nobody can say for sure either way), he's just a guy. Teams are not going to pay this much for him.

Still not at all interested from the Wizards perspective.

Deni is 23 and still improving. He is an elite defender, and averaged 19, 9 and 4 on a .600 TS% since February. He is locked into a deal that will have him making 80% of the MLE in 2028. He can't be had for two FRP's. It doesn't tempt me one bit. Deni is roughly as good as guys like Scottie Barnes, Mikal Bridges and Jalen Johnson, only his locked into an ultra cheap deal.

There is no precedent for a rebuilding team to trade away a 23-year-old who is this good and still on the upswing for a grab back of mediocre mystery picks.

Well considering that Deni is a full decade younger than Holiday, I would say that would warrant a value difference.

The simpler trade of Avdija for a single OKC player (either Giddey, or a bench player) and a bunch of picks just makes so much more sense.

The simplere trade might be an overpay for OKC, but they are just not going to have enough roster spots for all those picks over the next few years. This is a good consolidation for them even if the value is unbalanced in a vacuum.

Avdija looked like more than "just a guy" this season, but it will take another couple of seasons for the rest of the league to believe he's more than "just a guy" as TC says. He may end up as really good, but in the meantime, WAS needs to find a franchise cornerstone and/or young core to build around. Washington could really use a lot of bites at the apple, and a slew of mid-FRPs from OKC would provide that.
In a no-win argument, the first poster to Let It Go will at least retain some peace of mind

I made this a big overpay intentionally as to me that would be the only way WAS moves Deni. But apparently its not enough still.

I am not sure I have ever seen such a disconnect between how a player is valued by his franchise vs outsiders. Not calling anyone out, its just interesting.

Outsiders simply assume that all Wizards players are trash because the Wizards won 15 games.

Deni is really, really good. The problem is, he is more of an "uber role player" prototype than a star, and on a team without stars, it makes it harder for Deni to shine. But I honestly believe Deni will have a career similar to guys like OG Anunoby, Aaron Gordon or Derrick White. They may not be All-Stars, but they are hugely important to the success of winning teams. The only reason those guys were ever traded was because they were due for a massive salary increases at the end of their rookie deal. The Wizards have managed to avoid that problem so there is no motivation to trade him.

And there's still a good chance that Deni continues to improve. I'm not sure what his ceiling is. He has made massive improvement this year on on-ball shot creation ability. The guy had 43 points, 15 rebounds and 3 assists in a game earlier this year.

I mean why come to a league-wide board if you believe that Wizards fans are completely objective but that outsiders all have zero ability to separate talent from w/l record? Just stick on Wizards fansites where you believe you will get a more accurate view of the value of Wizards players in that case.

Do you believe outsiders think Wemby is trash?

I think its okay for people to have a different value on a role player for very specific reasons they have provided without it being treated reductively the way multiple Wizards fans are itt.

I like Deni a lot, and he makes sense in OKC
Giddy, Dieng, #12-too much for him?

I have no idea how anyone could see this offer for Deni and think 'wow, you must think all Wizards players are trash' lol.

I'm not sure it's an overpay, but it'll take an overpay to get him out of D.C. Some players can't be had for fair value because their teams don't want to trade them. This is especially true of bad teams who have very few positive players and aren't exactly a free agent destination. Even from an ownership perspective, you can't put 5 Jordan Pooles on the court and expect fans to continue to buy tickets. Someone has to go on the poster wearing your jersey.

"trash" was an overstatement.

But people either consciously or subconsciously downgrade their assessment of Wizards players because of their record.

I think this is a fair enough way of putting it.

Indeed, most players can't be had for fair value because most players fit well where they are. The only players that can be had for fair value are the players teams are trying to move, or at least are open to move for various reasons. Both Giddey and Kuzma fall into that category.

But players that are really well-liked and fit well in a system take more than fair value to obtain.
