Pels/Magic

Post#1 » by Texas Chuck » Fri Jun 7, 2024 8:38 pm

CJ
#21

for

Carter Jr
Anthony
25 ORL 2nd
27 ORL 2nd

Magic get their offensive guard, but still keep most of their cap space to go get a big of which there are more attractive options than guard. Plus pick up another first.

Pels pick up a center who can provide some spacing, a bench scorer, and clear some apron room. Follow up with a BI for Murray trade and now their roster makes a lot more sense. Back fill in a couple 2nds.

In all seriousness, CJ is a better fit for Magic offensively & defensively than NO's.

Zion is just not a strong enough defender, especially when out of shape or fatigued to pair with CJ defensively. When BI & CJ shared the court Zion was taking between 8-12 APG where NO's want him taking upward of 16.

This NO's fan is on board with it.

I'm trying to decide whether the Pels want Anthony back here or whether they'd prefer the cap reduction. Ideally, I think you rope in the Wizards, add a 1st, and try to talk Ty Jones into a S&T.

Oh I definitely think finding a new home for Anthony would thrill New Orleans. Just didn't want to over-complicate it. Could also send Anthony to Portland with something and bring back Brogdon with no long-term commitment. Portland ducks tax, gets a little asset, doesn't care about the future Anthony money because they are going to be terrible regardless and have other contracts they are already happy to ride out.

Other options exist as well.

The Magic already have to find minutes for Black and Howard next year. What are they going to do with two more rookies?

How does this trade look without WCJ and the #21?

Seems okay without them I guess? Pels could then go shopping for their center with that big TPE and they'd still have the pick.

If I'm the Pelicans, I don't want to put off the second part for later. While I've plugged the hole at the 5, I've created a pretty glaring one in the backcourt.

Again, one deal never precludes others, including building it into the structure of this one. But I don't believe every deal must solve every need.

21 and WCJ seems to be unnecessary. Cole Anthony and 2 seconds would give the Pelicans a massive trade exemption to play with.

I can't see Orlando wanting to part with WCJ for someone who'll be 33 going into next season.

I imagine it looks like Pelicans bailing.

For me that would be dependent on a 3rd team possibly having interest. Otherwise, the cap space to sign a defensive C to compliment what Carter brings to the table for some versatility would be nice.

No offense Cavs fan but I rather target Claxton in free agency than trade for Allen.

Allen has 2yrs control & a salary raise point at 20m if he even decides to stay in NO's.

NO's are one Zion injury away from any move going south with BI swapped out for fitting pieces around him. This is part reason Sarr is my primary target. His potential compliments Zion best but in a worse case scenario gives NO's a pivot point with Zion also .

No offense taken. I prefer the Cavs not trade Allen.

I'd prefer that. I dont even mind giving up the #18 pick on draft night if every prospect i like is already gone.

Age is not as big an issue with CJ, if your team can compensate for him defensively, you'll benefit. His game is not based in athleticism, he was never a good defender but he's coming off the best shooting season of his career as an elite spacing option. 42% on 8 APG. If Magic are looking for a spacing option, who can create some offense, it would be hard to do better especially considering trade cost. Someone younger averaging CJ's splits would be a costly trade.

Can the TPE be declined to be used as cap space ?

I would go the route of signing a free agent & drafting a potential C at 21 to cast a net, improve versatility & depth. Some mocks have Ware late 20's. I don't know how he's not higher but if he's there at 21 ...

FA -Claxton to offset Carter defensively, #21 Ware's potential developing.

22 points, 5.1 assists, and 4.8 rebounds per 36, shooting 9.3 threes a game at 42.9 %!! Arguably the best three point shooter in the league. And y’all think the Pels would give him away?

Ya I really like this for both teams. Here's an overcomplicated version that probably completes this for all parties (not including draft compensation, add as needed or as Chuck likes to say "a first to your favorite team").

Pelicans out: Ingram, CJ
Pelicans in: Murray, WCJ, Hunter

ATL out: Murray, Hunter
ATL in: Ingram, Cole

Magic out: WCJ, Cole
Magic in: CJ

Pelicans address 1 and 5, open up 3 for Murphy. Murray - Herb - Murphy - Zion - WCJ

ATL breaks up the failed backcourt. Temporarily takes Cole until they can find a new home (more complicated 4th team..). adds BI
Trae - Ingram - Johnson - Sarr - Capela

Magic add a short term high impact scoring guard and likely gets a pick.
