Houston has been rumored to be shopping the 3rd pick. They seem to be targeting Mikal Bridges or just a clean upgrade to consolidate the roster.

Could Detroit either enter this larger trade as a 3rd team to help facilitate a deal or perhaps help Houston pivot? Below are several scenarios:

1. Ausur Thompson for Whitmore, Eason

Houston consolidates and banks on both twins as a cleaner part of their future rotation.

2. Ausur Thompson, 5th pick for Whitmore, 3rd pick, future protected BKN pick.

Makes more sense for Detroit if they want to draft Reed and he won’t be there at 5

-Whitmore can be replaced with Eason if needed

Why for Detroit:

Add more spacing, even out rotation and take educated flyers on young talent that can start and be part of their future core, or ensure Reed is there.

Second version seems fair with Whitmore - Pistons add two spacers. Thompson might turn out well, needs to make shots.

I particularly have 0 interest in Whitmore. I also have no interest in #3.

I'd trade #5, Ivey, Duren before I consider trading Ausar.

I'd be interested in add Tari Eason to Cade and Ausar.

Probably a more realistic route.

Detroit needs youth and spacing in one fell swoop. The move has more merit if the Spurs are a threat to take Reed at 4.

Surround Cade with Reed and Cam is a more sensible youth trio with Duren at the 5 moving forward.

Ivey’s value is too low now to move. Agreed he should be moved instead, but don’t see Houston, or anyone else, giving anything of decent value to acquire him.

Eason is great, but as a non spacing additional big - offensively it gets tight fast.

I don't see the logic in putting the Thompson Twins together. Individually, each guy is problematic because they can't space the floor so you really need to play them with a stretch 5. Combined, they would be a spacing disaster - totally unplayable.

I personally would not mind it if the Rockets tried to get Ausur, but these deals are too much.
Maybe just straight up for the #3 (I don't know if Houston OR Detroit would do it).
I can't see the Rockets breaking up their core 6 anytime soon.
They need to address shooting before they bring in another non-shooter, though.

the Thompson twins shot 18% and 14% from three... one of them is going to have to figure out how to shoot before you even think about pairing them.

Not sure there are 2 players that fit worse together than Amen and Ausar…. A lot of role overlap and of course the shooting stuff. Hard to hide 1 terrible wing shooter, much less 2.

If Weaver was still the GM, we might be having a "Amen to Detroit" conversation, so that the team would have historically bad spacing.

Ivey is gone. He will be traded. He have value to some teams. He would be a great fit in Brooklyn for examples, but there are other teams that could use him, and develop him better than Detroit.

I've got both of the Thompson twins as "high ceiling / low floor" players. They both have diverse games and a lot of ways to contribute, but if their shots don't come around, they are fringe rotation players at best. I mean, as is, is either better than Hamidou Diallo?

I've been watching the NBA long enough to be very humble about predicting what young players will or will not learn how to shoot, and I've guessed wrong more times than I can count. One Thompson twin is enough for me.

I looked at number two. I think that if Detroit really likes Reed that it makes sense. I’d actually swap that Brooklyn pick for Eason. I really like Eason for Detroit as a four. I’d do that deal in a heart beat. 3, Whitmore, Eason for Thompson and 5. I’d be happy.

I don't think there is anything salvageable here.

Whitmore + Eason > Ausar

I'd argue Whitmore by himself is more valuable than Ausar simply because I do not see a path to Ausar having a serviceable jump shot.

There is no chance the Rockets would include Whitmore in a deal for Thompson. From a fit perspective (not value), it doesn't even make sense to trade Eason for him.

This deal is DOA from the Rockets side.

How about Detroit goes "Twinning" and trade Cade for Amen. Rockets are trying to win, not build gimmicked rosters.

Most posters just talk about Ausar’s shooting and I’m not sure how many have actually watched him play. He is already elite on D. Great rebounder. Unless the Pistons are getting a great package back, I’d give him a year or two to develop that shot. If he does, he could be all NBA potential. Most all rookies are risky and if you can get half of your picks to be legit starters, you’re doing good. But giving up on them after the first year doesn’t seem to make much sense.

I prefer Whitmore over either Thompson personally.

Without opining on whether Detroit should consider trading Ausar or not...this is a caveat big enough to fly a 747 through for a guy who shot 18% from 3 this year.

This forum has spent the last couple weeks essentially calling Josh Giddey unplayable because of what happened in the Dallas series, and he's a career 31% 3pt shooter.
