Spurs | Blazers

With the rumors that Portland is trying to get a second top 10 pick, I'm throwing this out there for comments:

#8
for
#14 + Brogdon

I believe Spurs have sufficient cap space to get this trade done without any other matching salary. They get a great vet PG to work with Wemby and work on starting winning.

Blazers cash in Brogdon and get the second top 10 pick they are rumored to want.

Works for POR but SAS might prefer the earlier pick.

Depends who is on the board for both squads.

Easy yes for Portland.

I know Spurs are Point guard hunting, but do they really value Brogdon? Is he viewed as a mentor to help Wemby get reps in with a good guard? Are they thinking draft a guard and have Brogdon help train the guard? Given that he wouldn’t be part of the long term plan beyond development, do Spurs really want to drop down in the draft for him? Best scenario I can see is Topic dropping to 14 and Spurs kind of still wanting him, so they have Brogdon in Topic’s ear for a season as he recovers, and helps train with Wemby. But if Spurs really like Topic, I’d think they just draft him at 8 and try to get Brogdon for a handful of 2nds instead.

yeah I don't see the Spurs dropping that far for a player who they might could have for just taking on the contract. Maybe a 2nd rounder or two.

Same. This is a high price to pay for a guy you're basically bringing in just for veteran leadership.

I think there's a decent chance Portland would give him up for free just to get off his contract and duck the tax. If not, there are plenty of other guys you can go out and get for leadership without moving down in the lottery (Chris Paul?).

I think Brogdon could be traded to either the Spurs or Detroit (If they move Ivey) for a couple 2nds

I'm not sure if the Spurs can even take Brogdon into cap space. Even if they can, I'm not sure I'd want the Spurs to commit to that. They have Tre Jones, who's basically as good as is brother when you look at his stats as a starter. They aren't going to value the position as desperately as RGMers project.

EDIT to demonstrate what I meant about Tre and Tyus:

Category Tyus Tre (Starter)
Minutes 29.3 30.3
Points 12 11.3
Rebounds 2.7 4.3
Assists 7.3 7
Turnovers 1.2 1.6
Stocks 1.4 1.3
3P% 41.4 38.8
TS% 57.8 62.3
ORTG 126 127
DRTG 121 116

So many folks thought the Spurs should trade assets to do whatever they can to bring in Tyus without realizing they already have that level of PG play. They can upgrade, but they're okay.

I like Brogdon, but thinking he gets you from 14 to 8 is delusional. Maybe a SRP or 2 plus cap space is most he'd command IMO.

I think this is a pretty high evaluation of Malcolm.

Want to move Simons over him anyways.

Does Brogdon, 14, 34, and 40 for Devonte Graham and #8 get any close? Drops Portland below the tax, upgrades SA point guard, and keeps the Spurs FA money partially available.

What about Simons + 14 for 8 + lowest 25 FRP (Unless all fall in lotto, then deferred to lowest 26 FRP unless all fall in lotto - then 2SRP)

Spurs already have 4 picks in this draft, they don't need 6. Only deal I see for Brogdon is, like I said, 1 or 2 SRP plus matching expiring, which would probably require guaranteeing Graham's contract.

Simons is the only asset the Blazers have that the Spurs could realistically consider to move down from 8 and even then it would depend on who is available (say, Sheppard or Castle fall to 8, I don't see the Spurs trading down). Also I don't think it would be smart of the Spurs to throw in a '25 FRP which is likely even more valuable than 8 itself (Spurs own, Hawks or Bulls could very well be lottery picks).
I guess it would come down to maybe another asset on the Spurs roster the Blazers could value (not Vassell or Sochan), like Tre Jones (pretty good young backup pg who can run a team, and right now he's actually quite better than Scoot), Champagnie (young wing who can shoot but not much else), a far out protected pick (when the Spurs should be good, say when it's in the 20s), or multiple 2nd round picks.
Only way I could see Blazers going for a package like that is if value 8 that much more than 14 (say, they love Buzelis, Salaun and Cody Williams and want to make sure they get 2 of those 3) then maybe that could be a rough framework, but I wouldn´t do more for the Spurs and I don´t think Blazers do that.

The Spurs don't have a bunch of cap space, and Simons' value drops significantly if the Spurs have to use what they have to bring him in. I wouldn't want Simons at all, but the Spurs could think differently. Even if they do, such an acquisition likely wouldn't come in the early off-season.

Counter proposal
7, 14, Brogdon
for
4, 48, Devonte Graham

Blazers should not be using 7 and 14 to move up to 4 in this draft.

Well everyone knows there are five tiers in this draft:

1-4
5-8
9-35
36-48
and 49-59

So if you're trying to jump up a whole tier, you've gotta be willing to include a second lottery pick. It only makes sense.
