DAL/POR Dallas goes bigger

*This probably needs help balancing*

Assumptions:
1. Portland wants to get assets for their vets and ownership wants to get below the tax.
2. Trades for Dallas that dump enough money to resign DJJ don’t improve the team.
3. Dallas needs shooting and a 3rd ball handler.

Portland receives:
THJ - Green - Kleber - Powell - 2025 1st - 2025 Toronto 2nd

Dallas receives:
Brogdon and Grant

Why for Portland- Portland picks up a 1st next year and a good 2nd in a draft class where they might not have a pick. They shave roughly 8.8 million in money next year and save roughly 76-77 million in future money. I know roster spots are a concern for Portland so an extension to this could be sending Kleber to a contender where he would have some value and probably buying THJ out.

Why for Dallas- Dallas commits to being an above the 1st apron team this season. They greatly improve the team shooting both behind the arc and at the charity stripe. Get 2 well rounded offensive players. Dallas would have a very good top 7 of Luka - Kyrie - Grant - PJ - Lively - Brogdon - Gafford and then hope to get playoff minutes from Hardy, OMax, Exum, or with the TMLE. Dallas would still have enough below the 2nd apron for a couple vet mins and the TMLE to fill out the roster.

There is another variation where Dallas sends AJ Lawson’s non guaranteed contract instead of Powell’s which saves Portland even more money and another roster spot but it puts Dallas in to difficult of a financial position.

You are 3 mil away from 1st apron and this trade, which locks you in at 1st apron because incoming is >100 percent of outgoing, adds about 5 mil + roster hold (3 more mil), so it makes it illegal.

I don't think POR is this desperate to get under...they have many routes. Maybe they take it on the chin with Grant's long-term deal, but they don't need to give away expiring Brogdon as part of it, imo.

I checked with a couple online trade machines so they must be wrong.

Taking in this many players under contract is pretty tough for Portland in their current position. They will be at roster capacity even before they have 4 draft picks. I doubt Portland wants to waive 4 players or not sign multiple rookies, so they will be in desperation mode to consolidate players into fewer players in a matter of weeks (when rookies need signed), and teams will probably try to leverage that against them in any follow up trade talks, so I don’t think this trade happens without another trade or trades already lined up with multiple players going elsewhere. Without another trade lined up or expanding this trade, I don’t think Portland puts themselves in this position and goes for simpler fixes to their salary position, and will have more time to find a trade sending out vets for assets.

Alot of machines havent caught up to the new apron rules

I believe that the trade would be legal if you add Dante Exum, assuming that Dallas stays under the Second Apron moving forwards (they would be hard capped).

That aside, I think Portland would need more value, given that there is a lot of dead salary. Maybe adding swaps in 2028 and 2030 (swap rights with worst of Dallas and San Antonio) would even the value out enough.

Dallas could take the worst of the 2030. 2028 is going to OKC I believe.

I don’t disagree. I think Dallas could put that onus on them by sending Lawson’s non guaranteed and then Dallas would need to find their own way to split Powell into 2 minimums themselves.

Adding exum isnt enough to make it less than 100 percent incoming so they are still hardcapped at 1st apron i think

This portland fan would wait for better valuation and fit.

yeah its just too much salary for Dallas to realistically add. And unless Portland valued Green for some reason this isn't really that great of a return. It does save a lot of long=term money but I think Portland passes on this.

Dallas could likely deal for just Grant. Or maybe even Grant/Thybulle who we know they tried to sign last year.

I think POR needs more value. Maybe swap the 25 DAL FRP with the 31 DAL FRP. 2025 will likely be a pick between 20-30 while 2031, it can be potentially very valuable for POR. Still might not be enough but it's more enticing then the original trade if I'm POR gm.

2031 is for sure more valuable but not aways to a GM who may not have a job there in 2031.

Thybulle/Grant is definitely easier to facilitate money wise.

I would limit myself to J.Grant..and then trade for Caruso with the remaining assets..less salary too

If these are the rumors, there is no reason for them to be believed...

Chicago is going to be disappointed if they think that the expiring Caruso will get anything close to that in terms of value. Gafford+Hardy for AC..?
In the event that they do not want selections....

THJ+2 SRP to 3 team..

Maxi/Powell to BLAZERS

J.Grant/Duop Reath to MAVS

Lively/Reath/FA
JGrant/PJ/O-Max
Luka/DJJ
Caruso/Green
KI/Exum

Hard pass from POR.

That’s a FRP short.
