That’s a ton of money. Hope that their governor has learned his lesson to stay out of operations. Sheesh.

Aren't they also paying two GMs here? Yikes.

Monty got exactly what he wanted!

He never wanted that job and coached like it. But if someone insists on backing up the Brinks truck to your front door... don't look the gift horse in the mouth.

If I'm Monty, I'm spending a year or two in the Pacific islands before getting back to find a new job. And he will get one.

He probably doesn't want to do it but I'd love to have him on the OKC bench again as an assistant.

This seems like Kenny Atkinson's music, assuming he wants to relocate his family to Detroit. Monty has to be so happy. Collecting that kind of paycheck sitting at home seems glorious. He can consult with teams if he has the itch.

There goes my Cam Johnson for Ivey pipe dream.

Yeah I too admire their willingness to cut their losses. But I do wonder how much they will be willing to spend and what that means for the candidates who consider them.

But its a good sign for the Pistons.

That $12m check from luxury tax distribution payments they’re getting helps a lot.

The money is a parking ticket to Gores anyway.

Whatever you want to say about Gores (and there’s a lot to criticize, both in the realm of basketball and out), he’s never shied away from spending money on this team.

Weaver should've been fired the moment he went to ownership and said this is what it's going to take for Monte to agree to coach here. He's basically telling ownership that a good coach views the team as being so badly managed it won't get fixed over the life of that contract.

I really like JB as a hire here.

It’s hard to see someone else living your dream (getting paid $10M a year to not work)

Generally people that get that good at something love either the work or the competition. Rarely do they love leisure. It may happen a bit more with athletes who rely on physical abilities but for coaches and executives, even if they don't need the money, they need something to push their competitive juices in the game that they presumably love. So, I expect him to be coaching/consulting/broadcasting somewhere within the year.

Great move! Yes, it is a lot of money, but you can't change the culture of a team without changing the coach.

Wow. Usually only contenders not living up to expectations but lose a coach so early in their contract. I’m guessing things were also bad behind the scenes and not just on the court.
