The inevitable occurs: BK/ATL/CLE

If D Mitch does not sign the extension with CLE, they move while they can and get value in return + a plethora of 1sts + expiring money (DFS, CC). They either keep DFS an likely move JA or CC (or both) immediately thereafter and build around a healthy Garland, Dejoute, and Mobley. They likely star chase using some of the many picks they have received from BK to bring in an A level star attaching JA with those picks and possibly rerouting DFS along with this superior package (Giannis? Zion? Embiid if Philly strikes out?)

CLE:
Outgoing: Donovan Mitchell, Caris LeVert
Incoming: Dorian Finney-Smith, Clint Capela, Dejounte Murray, 2026 PHI 1st via BK, 2029 DAL 1st via BK, 2028 PHX 1st via BK

BK sends away much of the draft ammo for Mitchell and instead of letting Ben just come off the books they move in for Mitchell while they can. They also reunite with LeVert and keep their young core intact.

BK
Outgoing: Ben Simmons, Dorian Finney-Smith, 2026 PHI 1st, 2029 DAL 1st, 2028 PHX 1st, 2030 BK 1st
Incoming: Donovan Mitchell, Caris LeVert

ATL gets off money fast with Simmons $40M coming off the books. They also get a coveted BK 1st as well as the ability to either rebuild around Trae and the 1st OR also move Trae and go with a complete youth movement. Futher, they get something for CC as they have been trying to get rid of him for a few seasons.

ATL
Outgoing: Clint Capela, Dejounte Murray
Incoming: Ben Simmons, 2030 BK 1st

Brooklyn fan?

I can't imagine the cavs would want Murray, given his contract status, level of play, and fit with Garland

otherwise DFS and all those firsts are "meh". The 2028 Phoenix has the best chance to be a good one, but not if Durant and Booker are there in 2028

And adding another rim runner, not shooting, expensive big in Capela seems like a not great idea, given the issues they already have with Mobley and Allen

Meanwhile Brooklyn gets Mitchell AND dumps Simmons while giving up nothing that hurts?

That trade is abysmal for everyone except Brooklyn.

ATL isn't going to turn around and trade Murray for a single draft pick 6 years from now. Not after everything they traded to get him.

One distant 1st for Murray (and a less playable EC the swap). That's not close. And Murray's the main value back for Cleveland.

If Murray is only worth Simmons and a 1st, Brooklyn just takes him AND trades for Mitchell.

not really what i'd be hoping for as a return for Mitchell.

most fans are going to what a really high level player coming back and few picks, in an effort to 'not take a step back'. i'm fine with a pick based package that just sets the timeline back a couple years as an alternative too. this really isn't either of those though.

Mitchell is signing an extension, but if lightening strikes and he doesn't, there are going to be like 5 teams bidding

This is beyond terrible for Atlanta.

Trae will only be 31 in 2030…..there will still be time to build around him and that pick

Atlanta complicates things.

Mitchell for Cam Johnson, DFS, 2027 PHX, 2029 PHX. That is the heart of a Mitchell to Brooklyn deal.

I think you're higher on Cam than you should be.

This is only bad for Atlanta IMO. And it’s pretty terrible for them..

If Mitchell refuses to extend… Cleveland would actually end up with 5-6 firsts for Mitchell by the time they flip Murray. Or Ingram+DFS+3-4 firsts? There is no 2026 Phoenix first, but guess that just becomes the 2025?

Brooklyn owes Atlanta another first and probably more. But Cleveland isn’t actually owed anything more IMO.

Only the Nets do this deal. Personally, I'd love to see it happen though. It would do wonders for the unprotected Cavs picks/swaps that the Jazz own.

Trae isn't staying around if all we get for Murray is a distant pick.

I have the Cavs getting the 2 most valuable PHX first rounders. I am not sure what makes you believe I am high on CJ. If I actually looked to find what version of a Brooklyn deal you would find acceptable under the “Mitchell refuses to extend” scenario, I bet it is similar to what I just posted. Lucky for you, I don’t feel inclined to search.

Explain to me how Brooklyn FRP 7 years from now is a coveted asset.
