Predicting the Simple and Boring Mavs Off-Season
Watching the Nico season ender interview, I have the feeling we'll simply run it back, with very few additions to the squad. Re-signing DJJ is priority 1a/1b, so that probably means he'll get the full NT-MLE. For that to happen, we must dump THJ's albatross salary.
I wonder what's the price to dump him straight up. Joe Harris got dumped for 2 2nds with a higher salary, maybe 3 2nds? Unless DAL loves a guy at #29 which I think Utah would do DAL '25 1st + THJ for #29 (not my preferred course of action, since I think a 1st at TDL can get a difference maker).
That'd be the 1st and probably only major move. ORL and DET are the biggest candidates (ORL needs shooting and DET for the Michigan connections). We'd keep a #15 pot open to have some flexibility going forward.
Doncic/Exum/#58 (Locked in on Spencer, Shead or Newton)
Irving/Hardy/Lawson
Jones Jr./Green
Washington/Kleber/Prosper
Gafford/Lively/Powell

I do not expect the team to just run it back minus Timmy.

Maybe will regret this stance..
But I’d really rather trade Kyrie and get younger versus running it back minus the guy that was supposed to put up points off the bench..
This is a great first move. And dumping THJ completely gives you wiggle room under the apron to take back extra in the main trade of the offseason. So it’s probably worth doing.
But if we are waiting for Lively to be the third piece and running it back.. or dreaming of PJ playing consistently.. I’d just trade Kyrie.

I hope Nico bluffs, we just reached the final and KI isn't getting any younger... If the Hawks reorganize, I would love to steal Bogdan and re-sign DJJ. use Dallas 25/Raptors SRP/THJ/Powell/Maxi to achieve it

I hope it doesn't happen, I think we are building something and KI is an essential part, being run over in the final shouldn't cloud our judgment, the season has been incredible...let's solidify our place, stumbling between deep races and being mediocre seems like a recipe for Luka to consider his long-term future

i still like a THJ (and maybe powell) to 3rd team, Hayward to Dallas deal that opens up MLE for DJJ

I’m in on Wiggins and Grant. I think they’re both the replacements and upgrade we need.
The idea of dump Timmy and bring back DJJ to just run it back sucks and I’d be disappointed.

My dream off season is:
Dump Timmy
Trafe for Sexton
Sign DJJ for MLE + McDermott/Bertans for BAE

I could get on board with this. We have a 25 y/o top 2 player in the world who isn’t even at his prime yet with a WCF run and a finals run under his belt. Plus Lively, Gafford, PJ as rotation pieces for the next several years. Dallas could pivot and reset the timeline.

What salary are you match with for sexton?

Im sure the offseason will be boring for them. Maybe try to find some cheap overseas talent again like exum and try and shed some salaries. Im guessing theyll wait to see who shakes loose at the deadline (like Wiggins if GSW hits a wall and decides to finally rebuild)

Green + Hardy, or dump Green, and use THJ.

Re: Predicting the Simple and Boring Mavs Off-Season
I proposed it over in the BroLo thread but I like him in Dallas. Gafford and Exum plus some combo of Powell, Hardy, 2025 TOR 2nd to balance out the value. Bucks want more defense and depth around their core. Mavs could use a stretch five to pair with Lively in their rotation.

Re: Predicting the Simple and Boring Mavs Off-Season
Maybe Denver's #28 (2024) + Zeke Nnaji for Exum and Powell.
Then use this pick to dump THJ and resign DDJ or maybe add Dallas 2025 1st to get something for picks + expiring

Re: Predicting the Simple and Boring Mavs Off-Season
I like the min deals of Bertans/McDermott. Not sure either of them can play (m)any playoff minutes but they certainly can help get through a RS. And while maybe they get more, they feel like reasonable possibles as min guys.
Don't mind Sexton.
Don't mind Wiggins
Hayward would need to be a min now for me I think. Definitely not a guy I'd hard cap myself to have.
Wouldn't add value to turn Gafford into BroLo.
Don't hate the Nnaji deal.
I don't see them trading Kyrie, but with jayjaysee that if the plan is just use assets to dump Timmy and bring back Jones, then they should explore trading him. Because other than internal growth from Lively, you are now worse, not better. Better to scoop up some assets towards a different co-star when one shakes free.
No real interest in Klay at $30M plus. Would rather do Wiggins for cheaper.

Re: Predicting the Simple and Boring Mavs Off-Season
I don't think they just run it back. They have limited assets, but the cupboard isn't all bare. Luckily for the Mavs and their fans, while losing in the finals hurt, it did not hurt the value of Lively, Hardy, and Green.
Green as solid value now, and being locked up cheap is a big deal. Hardy showed that he could be a big scorer off the bench for a team looking to get a young guard. Lively looks like the future there.
Gafford was made expendable imo, and could be moved. They have the ability to trade for a player in the 25-35 mil range if they are patient, and wait for the right timing.
Jerami Grant is the player i'm looking at the most, mainly because he could be the 3rd scorer, and is a versatile wing defender. His contract looks good going fowards with the cap raising.
THJ+Green+3 2nd round picks for Grant looks fair. Swap the 2nds for a future protected 1st because POR would be trading a hometown kid.
Another trade I see is Hunter from the Hawks for the same package. For some reason I see him getting moved, and he looks like he would be a classic fit in DAL They get a prospect and some solid 2nd for a player who really only commands a 1st.

Re: Predicting the Simple and Boring Mavs Off-Season
Something will be done, but cant really say what. I think the THJ dump will include more then that so a good player also comes back while still being able to resign DJJ. If they cant resign DJJ they need to get a new starting caliber POA defender, and I just dont see how they get away getting that cheaper then resigning DJJ. I think not much out of resigning DJJ will happen in the summer, then evaluate the team up to the tradedeadline to fix whatever needs fixing. Nico has shown he isnt shy about doing trades at that time of year if needed.

Re: Predicting the Simple and Boring Mavs Off-Season
Part of me is with Jay on selling high on Kyrie given his age and how crazy good the West is. But Luka seems to love him and there's something to be said for continuity and allowing chemistry to grow.
I can't for the life of me understand why anyone wants Kuz or Grant. Those guys have shown they care more about their individual numbers vs team success, don't want them near this team given that and their contracts. I don't think Wiggins is the guy either. He just seems to lack any kind of fire unless it's time to reup his deal, not a key to success.
I think unloading THJ or Green to make room for DJJ is the most realistic and should be done. We also need another PG since Kyrie is routinely unavailable and Exum routinely sucks.
However I'd go something along the lines of
1. 3 team trade, Mavs get Terrence Mann, Orlando gets Gafford, LAC gets WCJ
2. 3 team trade, Dal gets Kavon Looney, GSW get THJ, 3rd team gets Gary Payton II and Tor 2nd (via Dal). Maybe Tor themselves?
3. Resign DJJ to the MLE
Lively/Looney/Powell
PJ/Maxi/Omax
Mann/DJJ/Green
Irving/Hardy
Luka/FA/Exum
Of course not sure if any of those other teams bite on those proposals

Re: Predicting the Simple and Boring Mavs Off-Season
expanding on my bad idea..
Trading Kyrie isn’t my plan, I want to improve the team now and try and beat the superteam. It makes it more fun.. I just think I would prefer trading to running the team back, replacing THJ with a vet min and hoping for the best.
Dallas already saw the best. It was amazing. But it was not close..
Other teams (OKC/Memphis) are going to be a lot better next year. Denver/Minnesota aren’t going anywhere.
