PHX/UTA - Phoenix gets shot blocking

Phoenix trades #22, Roddy or Lee
Utah trades Walker Kessler

Pretty straight forward- Utah goes with a different look instead of the offensively limited Kessler and opts for another pick. Potentially Utah uses 2 or 3 of 22/29/32 to move up into the mid 10s or higher? Phoenix gets a shot swatter who should be quite good in a limited role next to a bunch of scorers

This certainly needs to be a 3-team. Not sure it's enough for Utah to get off of Kessler, and the team Utah is trading with may prefer Kessler + #29 + #32.

Imagine it's something like Kessler + #29 +#32 for JHS +#17.

I could see Orlando or Miami doing something similar.

I don’t see it for phx…. At end of day going to come down to who’s there at 22..

Let’s sat it’s a C like Eddy or Ware…. I would much rather have both of those guys over Kessler.

I think Utah phx deals look something like

22 for 29/31.
Or
Suns 2031 1st + little for Kessler + 29 + 31

Also, suns can’t aggregate salaries

It's just 22 for Kessler which isn't even close.

As the Suns, I’m probably not trading #22 for Kessler without getting some draft capital back. Suns have limited asset and the difference between Kessler and other center options, including Nurk, isn’t significant.

Man Kessler is getting way underrated these days.

22 as too much for him? Wild times.

That's fine if Phoenix should use its assets elsewhere, but the idea that Kessler is less valuable than the 22nd pick seems a bit silly to me.

Not trying to ruffle feathers but dude can’t even start on a Jazz team that won 30 games. He clearly regressed this last year. Don’t think it’s silly to have him valued around that pick. But like I said Phoenix, with their specific situation, wouldn’t benefit enough from a move like that imo.

He doesn’t even start for the Jazz. I like him fine but the value has to be down after last season. And the rest of my tweet that you cut off better explains my position.

I think Kessler's value ahs fallen significantly, but think it's higher than this. Utah is better off keeping him than trading him for pennies

I remember laughing at the idea that Kessler was pushing Paolo for ROY...No

Ironically, ORL could use a big rim-protector/pick setter...if the price was right, he could even be a great complement to Wendell Carter (who could also slide to 4 at times). I haven't seen enough of Kessler to understand what precipitated this plummet in value.

Phoenix needs someone who can eat the glass and play defense. Not sure Kessler is a good enough rebounder

If I'm the Suns, I would happily do this deal and I agree that the Jazz need more than #22.

I guess I’m off on this then. I don’t think a center is how the Suns should use that pick. I would much rather just keep Nurk and pivot to a more useful position.

Kessler can block shots but something isn’t right about him having all this value and not being able to start or play 24+ minutes per game on a team as bad as the Jazz.

I would hope after watching the Suns flounder for years with a great player in Booker and a very good one in Bridges that a distinction can be made between good players on bad teams and bad players on bad teams. Kessler is a good player on a bad team and a starting caliber center (albeit a below average one this early in his career) who has a positive impact on games. Utah has four guys that I think can unambiguously help teams with: Lauri, Kessler, Sexton, and Dunn. The rest are some combination of too young and inexperienced (George, Hendricks, Sensabaugh), very situation dependent (Collins needs to be the 5th best starter on a team that doesnt need him to dribble, Clarkson needs to come off the bench to keep the offense moving), meh (Yurtseven, Luka Semanic, Johhny Juzang), or plain averse to winning (Talen Horton-Tucker, Kira Lewis). The roster is not balanced, and the roster lacks playmaking talent (starting Lauri/Collins/Kessler means starting 2 guys who can't dribble at all and one who does a ton of damage off ball and who is really going to be challenged more if he is one of the only self creators). I have Kessler's value in the 12-16 range in terms of pick value, but I'd only trade him for something at the top of that range or to move up.

Also, again, I can respect the idea that Phoenix should use its assets at different positions, this is just a reflection on how I see the trade value.

Forget draft picks or value, how do we think teams would compare these players (including contract)

Kessler vs Eddy
Kessler vs Ware
Kessler vs Yvess
Kessler vs Holmes
Kessler vs Filipowski
Kessler vs Bona

There is a ton of center talent in this draft, 3-4 of these guys are probably available at #22, all on rookie contract for 4 more years.

For a one-way center with 2 years remaining on his rookie contract, this feels about right.

Totally get good players on bad teams. I just think his value probably got overinflated his rookie year. In the end I don’t think there is a huge difference between our value on the player.
