Draft night...ORL/SAC

ORL sends Wendell Carter, DEN 25 frp
SAC sends Huerter, #13
for SAC: name a better fit next to Sabonis, a big physical C, who can spread the floor, switch out on defense, is a heady 25yo player, making $12m per.
for ORL: I'm not doing this unless I've already "tamper talked"

to Claxton's people. Then, it's a no-brainer. Huerter has been a bit of a flop over the last couple of years, but his shooting and size make him a good piece to add on the bench...#13 gets ORL a solid guard, even if not for immediate impact (Topic, Carter, McCain?) and ORL still has #18 for a versatile upperclassman who can help now (da Silva, Shannon, Scheierman?). DEN 25 frp is a concession that #13 has value even in this "weak" draft. WCJ clearly has superior present value to Huerter, but both might find better fits.

WC3 doesn't have this value.
Huerter + 13 for WCJ + 18

Huerter at $17mil is a too expensive bench piece.

so taking 35 mill in unwanted money and denver pick have no value?

You value this years #18 > #25-#30 next year?
Interesting.
I actually prefer your iteration, I think the Denver pick could be sneaky good especially if they lose KCP.

They do. I think Huerter and WCJ are similar caliber players while Huerter is paid a bit more, which equates to moving from #13 to #18.

Yeah a Top 45 Wing has more value than a Top 25 Center.

30 teams, 2 wings, that 60 wing players just from starters. Is Huerter a starter on most teams?

I love how the OP starts by trying to denigrate Huerter because he had a bit of a down year last year but never before and faced injury.
I’m good with Huerter/13 for Carter/18 as a balanced trade for both.

Quick pass.
I don't have WCJ worth much more than Huerter. Not sure he's mobile enough to fit next to Sabonis either.
I'd offer Huerter + Portland 2nd and still wouldn't feel great about it.

Drop the picks. Huerter can be an elite shooter. WCJ will never be elite at anything. I actually like the player swap for both teams, though, from a roster viewpoint. Nicely done.

"denigrate"?

just spent enough time in every SAC fan's trade offer or SAC board to get the idea they've soured on him. I'd probably do your version...but only if I see whoever THE guy is drop there.

This strikes me as a trade that could occur in a few weeks as a fall back option if both sides miss out on their preferred targets. If Orlando signs a center in free agency like Claxton or Hartenstein while missing out on a SG, and Sac isn’t able to fill their backup center position, then a straight swap could make sense. Both are players who are better suited for bench roles and would fill needs if swapped.

I think we've soured for different reasons.
1. Our defense is bad, we are at the point where we are willing to sacrifice offense for defense
2. We have his replacement(s) already on the roster in Keon/Monk.
If we trade Barnes + other salary filler + pick for a forward upgrade and commit to Monk - Huerter - Lyles off the bench, I wouldn't be upset about it at all.
I wouldn't give 13 for WCJ, and I'm surely not paying to dump Huerter.

As I said in the OP, I wouldn't even dream of trading WCJ for Huerter, unless we already had Claxton in the bag...the primary objective , from ORL perspective, would be to upgrade the pick. Huerter is, effectively matching salary (and then some) that I figured was a plus for SAC as well. I'm not saying Huerter is a negative value, but I don't think he's close to WCJ, especially given his deal. I'd much prefer to Sign Claxton and keep WCJ to back up 4&5 inexpensively and effectively...as long as ORL still had a means to trade/sign a more effective Lead Guard. Huerter is a nice player and ORL, like any team, could use more shooting - if he reclaims it. But he's not a guy that ORL would pursue.

Fan opinions don’t change the value of an oversized SG that is a 40% 3pt shooter and can handle the ball.
It’s a premium in the League now. Bigs are very available at the moment.

I don't think calling Huerter a 40% 3 pt shooter is very accurate. He had one season at that level, quickly reverted to shooting 36% last year and is at 38% career. He also has only that same one season as an efficient scorer (over .600t%) with again a reversion to .564 (below league average) just above his career ts% of .563. Doesn't mean he isn't a long range shooter, just not an elite one.
Huerter has some value in the right situation and a lot of value if he ever returns to 2023 levels, but right now he's paid more than he produces for Sacramento.

.361 ain’t 40%, it’s more like league avg…and then what have you got beyond the 3pt shooting? A trade for Huerter - I DID propose it- is a hope that he reverts to previous form, hope that he once again shows any signs of offensive creation, and hope that your exceptional defensive schemes can hide him in a league that’s making that harder and harder to do. I assume SAC doesn’t have the cap space to do it without sending something out.
Btw, Wendell Carter shot .374 from 3 last year AND played defense AND rebounded AND got to the line over 3x as often AND scored more ppg, despite playing next to two 20 ppg guys in the frontcourt with him. Huerter is Kennard, or GTJ, or Beasley, or 10 other guys that will make less than him next year. Good weapon to have, but JAG… WCJ is not elite at anything, but he’s also pretty good at everything.
