Re: Woj: Obi to re sign with Indy 4/$60m
I'm kinda surprised no team wanted to give him a starting role after how he looked last year. Great for pacers, bad for toppin stuck behind siakam for 4 years

Nothing at all, really. Indy has said they see him as a 3/4, Siakam and Toppin as a 4/5, etc. Hes 20, and just the 2nd year of his rookie contract.

Happy for Obi.
confused for Indy.
Turner is going to need a new deal next season. Siakam just got the bag. Hali got the bag. mathurin is going to come due year after next.
Pacers really are acting like a big market club.
happy for them though. Fun to have a rivalry, hopefully next time we see you guys in the playoffs everyone is healthy.

I like it for the Pacers. If Tobi has a P.O. in that 4th year, I like it for him as well.

Yeah.
And I gotta say I didn't see this coming with Toppin, especially not with Rick Carlisle. So some crow on me for Toppin really finding a good solid role on a contender.
Guessing this kills the KCP talk we've been hearing with regards to Indiana.

O big changed and grew, and he’s just a perfect offensive fit with Haliburton and McConnell.

This one never made sense. It’s ridiculously tough for Indy to make salaries match. Obi would’ve been BYC, Denver above first apron, etc.

Re: Woj: Obi to re sign with Indy 4/$60m
I like it for IND on the pure value of it. I do see a decent chance they end up moving him.
I don't think he's a good enough rim protector to be a long term viable backup 5 for them in the playoffs. He filled that role this year in this year's run, but their defense was pretty bad. If they swap him out of that role, then the only minutes for him are the 10-12 at PF that Siakam is sitting.
Longer term, especially if Walker pans out for them as a part time PF that also plays SF, I see a very real chance he's moved to reallocate depth towards a perimeter player upgrade or a defensively superior backup 5. But he should continue to be a good player for them in the meantime and be a decent trade chip on this contract if it comes to that. If he works on his rim protection and becomes a defensively viable backup 5, then there's great potential to be a Bobby Portis type big off the bench too.

Yeah this is how you don’t build a contender by overpaying replacement level guys early in the process.

15 per for a backup 4/5, capable of spot starting, is not a bad thing. At the end of the day his salary could easily be used as filler in a trade.

Obviously they will be making moves after next season. I expect to see Turner get an extension at some point. Like you said, Mathurin will need a contract at some point and Nembhard as well, then there's Jackson who made a pretty big jump in the play offs. The Pacers are deep and talented.

Or you could do like the bulls and trade off all you draft picks on aging players like DDR and Vuc.

Looks like it starts at $13.4 next season and goes up to $16.6 million in 2027-28, I said it seems like a lot for a back up PF but he did shoot 40% from 3 pt range and he's a weak rebounder. Over all it's not bad.

This keeps an athletic contributor on their team who can play/defend a couple of positions and shoot well. In the event that they may get the money squeeze later, this contract will be positive value to trade for whatever their need may be.
