Good for Josh.
Smart signing by the Suns. He’s a tradable contract.

So Okogie improves his 3 pt shot and becomes great contract, or gets shipped off as an expiring with picks

I mean this is how you operate above the second apron. It’s pretty crazy but the strategy has to be to have tradeable salary.

The thing about doing this for tradable salary is there are very few good NBA players making less than this that are acquirable with what PHX has to offer. Tradable salaries are harder to justify when you can't aggregate and only get dollar for dollar matching but it's not my money

This is what I was thinking too. If it's to keep tradeable salary that simply isn't going to do much when you can't aggregate.
Who is that much better than Okogie who is making less than $8m and below? And who the other team would trade. Most of them are rookie scale.
And if you think they should be bringing in a bigger player for depth instead of another guard then its Kenrich Williams, Jae'Sean Tate or Kevon Looney. That's it.

Simone Fontecchio is the name I would watch. Suns wanted him at last years deadline but didn’t have the ammo. Along with the three names you gave, Jevon Carter, Saddiq Bey, and Dean Wade are all guys the suns might have interest in closer to the deadline. I’m sure there are more.
Thats the second apron game. Keeping options open.

Big question is "who can they acquire with their lack of assets who is making less than eight million this season?"
If there is a valid answer to that, then this is a fine signing. Happy for Okogie that he got a payday!

I’m not sure there is a valid answer. I took a peek at their remaining picks to see if it was as bad as I remember, and they’ve traded every 1st or pickswapped it through 2030, and they’ve traded every 2nd as well. They have an incoming 2025 2nd from BOS, but it’s top 45 protected, so little value there. This has to be a mechanism to attach their 2031 1st. If not, Okogie on an $8 mil deal is an overpay, so they can only trade it to eat bad future money (under $8 mil, since they can’t aggregate), and adding longterm bad contracts, even cheap ones, seems like a painful move for the expensive Suns.

Suns have 3 good 2nds (two from Denver I think 31/29 and suns 31), + their 31 1st.
