Took $113M less than he could get in a year. And I can't imagine the Knicks wouldn't have given it to him.

Man what a coup for the Knicks. Grabbed this guy for free in free agency, ends up being amazing and then takes a pay cut.

Brunson himself has made an error here though. Financially this is stupid.

That's insane.

I was just saying how shocked I was that Caleb Martin apparently turned down 5/65 from the Heat for 4/35 from the Sixers, but that's nothing in comparison to taking $113m less.

Knicks went out and created the Nova Knicks, Brunson is obviously very happy, I just can't comprehend giving up this much money.

I mean yes in terms of raw numbers he obviously should have waited. But he knew that. Gotta think keeing the Nova Gang together was a big part of his decision here.

He's got generational wealth either way, and this way he gets to keep playing basketball in the biggest city in America with his friends.

That same city was going to pay him a year later. Literally nothing changes for him except getting $113m less.

Even if he were to do a knee injury the extension he just signed would have been offered.

That same city was going to pay him a year later. Literally nothing changes for him except getting $118m less.

Even if he were to do a knee injury the extension he just signed would have been offered.

Nothing guaranteed tomorrow. Secure the bag today. No need to risk career altering injury.

Seems like a bit of PR spin by Woj and Rose imo.

He still would have been paid this lesser extension with a severe injury. That's the stupid part.

Brunson didn't make the top dollar he could, but he still locked down a massive payday. Why risk it? The NBA is quick to toss away small scoring guards after an injury. we watched it happen with IT in his contract year at 28. Kemba was treated like a toxic asset after his knee issues surfaced at 29, etc.

If I'm a soon-to-be 28yo guard like Brunson, I have to consider locking down the first monster payday I can get. The dollar difference makes it a tough choice, but I saw this situation going either way.

Some people feel there are things that are more important than money. Not sure how you can look at his life and current situation and not understand that..

A 28 year old small guard that plays very physically wisely takes the bird in hand instead of betting on staying healthy.

I mean, the NBA can try to investigate, but I don't think it will go far. End of the day, Jalens dad is making his own millions as an assistant coach (no cap on what they are paid) and Jalen knowns that if he wants to keep his friends, he has to take less. I think Bridges, DDV, and Hart all understand that assignment.

The big questions are going to be Randle and Mitch. OG just got his stuff sorted.

If he was a 6'7 wing with multiple all-star seasons, maybe. His track record isn't that impressive despite all the hype he got this season.

Cares more about winning a championship than extra money beyond extravagant wealth (which make no mistake the deal he signed is still extravagant wealth in any other context).

It's not a common priority for star players in the NBA, but I don't think he should be criticized for it. Not being purely motivated by financial opportunism shouldn't be considered a bad thing.

His extension starts at 22% of cap..

You don't think he gets that even with a season ending injury?

How much would you have paid Isaiah Thomas in 2019? Extreme example, but the worst case is he gets a fraction of his extension

That’s a big gamble against yourself to me. That’s a lot of money. I’d ask the Knicks to do some other things better before I’d give up 100 million for them.
