Lakers and Cavs

Post#1 » by bgrep14 » Wed Jul 17, 2024 12:09 pm

Lal - Knecht, Vincent, and Wood

Cavs - Okoro S&T (4/48), Merrill, and Jerome

Cavs get a bigger SF that can grow with the core and floor spacing big.

Lakers - Get an elite defender against PG/SG that they lack. Dump Vincent and get a cheaper backup pg. plus get an elite shooter who could be even better to play with LeBron.

As a Cavs fan, I'd do the deal just to get Knecht under rookie control, absolutely...

Not sure where to slot Okoro behind Reaves, Christie and Knecht (I know...) and therefore paying Knecht a third of Okoro's annual salary seems more economical. Okoro doesn't move the needle as to what the Lakers need.

Okoro provides the defense that no lakers player has in their arsenal at PG/SG between Reaves, Dlo, Christie, or Vincent. Lakers have Bron and Davis they need a primary defender vs guards. Salary is somewhat irrelevant because you’re dumping Vincent who doesn’t play. He’s also better than Max Christie at every phase of the game. I think Okoro and Reeves would start and Lakers would take Christie and Dlo off the bench. Reeves and LeBron could facilitate anyways.

Except it would remove one of the better younger pieces that we have just to have a slightly better than Max Christie (as you alluded to) ... Okoro isn't fetching this kind of value methinks.

Maybe things change when Lauri gets traded or renegotiated/extended, but one of the reasons I think Okoro is still a Cavalier is that there's a delta between the contract he wants and the contract S&T partners will offer.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think getting a S&T'd Okoro would hard cap them at the first apron; they're not shedding enough salary here to do that. Unless I'm missing something?

I don't think Knecht, Vincent, or Wood have a role on a contender in the next 2 years. Maybe Vincent as a minutes-eater.

I think Okoro does, and $12m/year is a pretty good deal for him. Particularly on a team that needs a great point of attack defender like you need in the West.

Merrill may or may not have a playoff role depending on matchups, but he's a perfect role player around LeBron.

I like Okoro as a POA defender, but you have to make the deal if you are Cleveland.
The question is, is Vincent's contract fully guaranteed? Would like to have an out after this season.

If Okoro gets his reps up, he is going to be a great 3rd wheel guard with Garland/Mitchell.

Knecht, Vincent, and Wood for Merrill and Lavert would also work, but I like Okoro's fit with the Lakers over Lavert personally.

Yep, I suspect the problem here is that Okoro wants more than 4/48.

Also worth noting that Knecht is nearly the same age as Okoro, and isn't much longer than him either.

Lakers are more than $7.5m away from 1st apron so there's no simple trade that gets them Okoro.

Would have to be something like:

Okoro (15m), LeVert, Wade
for
Rui, DLo, Vincent

Not realistic

Cavs say no there. But Rui and Dlo for Lavert, Okoro (4/48 or QO signed), and Niang would work. Could leave out Lavert and DLo.

That's not financially possible.

Lakers have to send out $9m to drop under 1st apron so that they can even accept an SnT player.

With salary matching rules Lakers would need to send out $45m at minimum and get back $36m.

Maybe the trade I suggested but with picks or Vando instead of Vincent?

Okoro ($14.2), LeVert, Wade
For
DLo, Rui, Vando

This might be the best deal to get Okoro to Lakers.

Garland, Mitchell, Strus, Mobley, Allen -- DLo, Merrill, Niang, Rui, Vando

Reaves, Okoro, Knecht, LeBron, Davis -- Vincent, LeVert, Christie, Wade, Wood

Those salaries aren’t really close to matching. You’d have to add Niang as well to make salaries match. Cavs would also probably want Wood inserted as well. Cavs can’t just take back 9 million extra in more money nor would they for what they’d be getting. Can the Cavs not just sign Okoro and trade him why would he have to sign with Lakers to facilitate?

The Cavs could withdraw the Q.O. and S&T with Bird Rights but you get back to what's the least he would agree to S&T for so it doesn't get you anywhere. If the Lakers just sign him outright, it would have to be for the tax MLE. Any Okoro to the Lakers scenario basically became impossible when DLo opted in.
