Magic In: Anfernee Simons
Magic Out: Wendell Carter Jr, Jett Howard, Caleb Houstan, 2025 FRP

Blazers In: Jett Howard, Caleb Houstan, Gabe Vincent, Max Lewis, 2025 ORL FRP, 2029 LAL FRP
Blazers Out: Anfernee Simons

Lakers In: Wendell Carter Jr
Lakers Out: Gabe Vincent, Max Lewis, 2029 FRP

Portland get two FRP for Simons and open up rotation space for Scoot & Sharpe. Also take a flier on young guys like Howard and Lewis.

The Magic get back a young dynamic combo guard with a skillset they're currently lacking. They lose their starting center but that is a position they have sufficient depth in.

The Lakers part with a FRP and their backup PG for a starting center with a skillset that fits with their stars.

Everything and anything Orlando could possibly see in Simon’s, Howard has the potential to become. Also, 5 yrs younger.

I also don’t think Simons has that kind of value at this point.

I don’t think Simons has had that value at any point, or ever will.

Touché

Furthermore, Simon’s doesn’t fit on this current iteration of the Magic. Orlando is 100% committed to playing through two of the best playmakers in the league and surrounding them with capable shooters that aren’t a liability defensively.

I could have seen a deal vaguely like this earlier in the offseason. Back when Simons would have started next to Suggs and they (presumably) had options for bringing in a replacement starting center.

Now they'd be trading their starting center for a 3rd guard upgrade, which is debatable even if they aren't adding incentive.

2 of the best playmakers in the league? Are you talking about Wagner and Banchero?

Yes, within their position of course (forward).

This would be a dream scenario for Portland, so not happening.

If there was ever a window for Simons to Orlando, I believe it is now shut.

It would also be unwise for LAL to give up a 2029 first round pick for WCJ.

Based on the actual, rather than hypothetical worth of likely late first round picks, this probably doesn't end up doing much for Portland, either, if we're honest. But Simons is likely gone after his contract is up (or otherwise unlikely to contribute to any successful editions of this presently atrocious team), anyway, so it's probably about time to take whatever assets are out there and move on. I mean, they can keep him -- I don't want the team totally stripped down to its underwhelming youth -- but I expect the team is in asset-management mode, in which case moving him for future trade/draft pieces makes sense.

In this case, particularly with the variability of the LAL pick, the deal likely far exceeds what they could get for him. I'd be shocked if he returns a single high-variability first. I doubt any team sees Simons as a foundational piece, so the Blazers should be hoping a contender (or pretender) sees him as a microwave scorer or dynamic additive to an offense that has other creators but lacks shooting/scoring punch. That might draw a weak, protected first rounder?

This is an overpay for Simons and would also necessitate PDX cutting 3 players which just isnt reasonable.

if only they would listen to those players and get them the help they asked for

I think Orlando is pretty locked in to our current guard rotation for right now. I don't think they would spend like this for Simons unless it was to start and I think we are pretty locked in to starting KCP/Suggs to start the season. Maybe if the front office's plan isn't working around the trade deadline they might try bringing in someone else but I think for now they're satisfied with our guard rotation.

Massive overpay for Simons. He doesn't have anywhere close to that value. Plus he isn't a fit in Orlando, front office has made it clear that if you if you can't defend you don't get minutes. Simons is one of the worst defenders in the entire league.

Giving up our starting center, a first rounder, and a former first rounder for an overpaid no d back up combo guard is terrible. I think that the Magic are set at this point. Unless the Magic can add a solid pass first solid defending PG who won’t break the bank, it’s a hard pass on any trade.

This deal over all is terrible for the Magic and makes them worse.

Agreed and he isn’t better than KCP or Suggs so this deal is terrible to add a backup guard.
