Cleveland locking in their guys is awesome. Financially they'll probably have to make a choice to trim payroll moving forward, but this coming year everyone should be healthy and they can evaluate long-term fit. My assumption is that they end with 3 of their core 4 staying, and Garland is the odd man out, or they try to aggregate Garland and one of Mobley/Allen into a player at a different position (e.g. Booker).

I can't believe they're still keeping Allen for some reason even as they give a max to their other center.

"Yes, two non-shooting centers has failed on every team in the last five years, but what if Kenny Atkinson is literally magic."

Was going get the max anyway. Just need play musical chair and see which 3 of the 4 players have a seat at the end of the season.

I dunno. This feels like a mistake to me. Maybe one they had to make. But, I'd rather just have the Daniel Gaffords of the league as my big and have the money to spend on other positions.

It feels like there should be a middle ground for these guys, but there just isn't.

I don't know, I've been wrong in the past about contracts being too big. Maybe I'm wrong again. Maybe they had zero choice.

Ugg.

Feels more like a funeral than a celebration to me though.

I mean, it should only be 2 out of the 4.

People understand that rookie max deals are on 25% of the current cap? When the new TV deal kicks in, both Mobley and Garland will be making less than that on a percentage basis.

It's why teams are handing out the 5 year deals.

True, but assuming these are standard increasing contracts, the fifth year still projects as 22.5% of the cap.

I say this as Cade guy — all of these guys (Cade, Barnes, Mobley, Franz) are still a bit of a risk on these contracts.

The cap is projected to raise by 10% a year. That's compounded.

Probably eventually with the way trades restriction are going .

Nope. Assuming standard ascending contract for Mobley and a 10% per year raise in cap, it’s still at 22.5% of cap for the fifth year. Check spotrac. That’s what I did.

Works out that way because of the 7-8% yearly raise in the deal.

Golden State won a title starting Draymond and Looney. Atkinson was an assistant on that team.

Looney's never played more than 24 minutes a game and only a very tortured definition of "center" includes Draymond...

Draymond was also a reasonably credible three point threat for a while.

Yeah, it would have been great to get a small discount, but you never risk him hitting free agency and some team offering him a 2+1…

I also don’t know why no one seems to think he can improve further on his range/FT (or just take more 3’s) after improving last season..

Good for Cleveland if there’s no player option, good for Mobley.

I would be doing a lot of work on this roster, but having 3 stars locked up through at least 2026-2027 is a really nice player to be.

His form is terrible, his touch is clearly not good (career high of 72% at the line), and his release is far too slow.

You say his career high is 72%. I say developing and a 4.5% increase from year two to three… Makes for really different talking points.

Not saying he becomes KAT. But looking at his splits, it does seem like he has improved.. Say his 3 drops from 37.3 to 34.5-35% but he takes 2.5-3 next season, Cleveland fans are happy, probably? And his FT only raises to 74%..

I was high on Mobley coming out, but his offensive “potential” hasn’t panned out yet. He’s still young and improving, but I just don’t see him making a huge jump at this point. The Cavs don’t really have an option other than locking him up right now, but it’s rough handing out a max deal to someone who probably is going to be you 3rd or 4th option.
