TOR-LAL: Bruce Brown to the Lakers

(Note: sorry for another Brown proposal from me

, it’s the dog days of the offseason and this deal conceptually makes a lot of sense, so I could see it happening)
Here’s the trade:
Bruce Brown
for
Rui Hachimura, Gabe Vincent, 2 ‘25 2nds (LAL+LAC)For the Lakers, it accomplishes a few things:
- Gets a veteran POA defender for a deep playoff run
- Opens up salary to pickup buyouts candidates this year (a key LAL advantage that was otherwise not available)
- Makes them free agency contenders for next season by having massive expirings of ~$50M (Brown, DLo, +)
For the Raptors:
- Gets Rui + 2 2nds in a decent draft year. Rui’s timeline matches their core.
- Gabe + Rui expire in ‘26 and will be trade fodder for next offseason when Raps are looking to trend upwards. Raps will also have 2 ‘26 1sts to dangle, in case a star trade opens up.

I feel like this variation has been proposed enough times, and it felt like the general consensus is that Ratpors fans felt like they deserved multiple SRPs for absorbing Vincent's deal and felt like they need a legitimate return on an "asset" in Brown which is where the disconnect seemed to be with Lakers' fans.

Think lakers need more depth imo. Don’t think lakers actually getting cap space. Maybe 10 million ish in this scenario.

I think Rui is more valuable to the Lakers than Brown would be. Could maybe see D'Lo, Vincent, JHS and 2nds for Brown + Agbaji. That could help balance LA's roster and Toronto swaps Agbaji for a younger guy who I think would be really nice next to Quickley.

I still never found the right trade, but I got Brown next to Trae. Dyson gets plenty of minutes next to Trae still. Brown/Bogdan can play some minutes together. Feels like a great final “guard” (wing) for this season.. And Capela is a near perfect matching salary.
Needs a third team probably, but I still like it.

I think Rui is a better player than Bruce Brown, so I fail to see this from the Lakers.

Deleting Hachimura and Gabe Vincent's salaries still has the Lakers over the salary cap so I don't see how this move makes them a player in the 2025 FA market.

Pass on all these deals
I am fine keeping Dlo if we cant upgrade from him at the pg spot
We need some sort of 3 point shooting threat that can also create for himself and others
Bruce Brown is overpaid, just wont make sense
Cam Johnson is the target I would go for
Shouldnt cost too much, fits beter than Rui for us, and can close games
Going for Bruce Brown makes it impossible to get him and Cam (unless Dlo is moved)

That works too. I think this version works on value, but may lose marks on strategic fit.
Rui isn’t gonna get that much playing time, because Lebron/Vando/Knecht/Reddish is a pretty full 3/4 rotation….and they would be in position to add a vet forward on the buyout market.
Also, LA would love to be free agency players next offseason, so I can see them wanting to retain big expiring son DLo & Brown.
But, I do accept your proposal on value, for both teams.

The expirings are:
Brown (23), DLo (18), Wood (3), Reddish (2.5), Hayes (2.5)
That’s nearing $50M. Plus you have the cap going up.

It's pointless exercise to see how much money you can delete. You have to look at how much money still remains on the books.

Rui is better than all but LeBron, though, so I think it is pretty irrelevant that he'd be blocking Cam Reddish from seeing the floor (that should be a preferred outcome).
