We may see a Steph Curry to LAL move this year

Post#1 » by MessiahUjiri » Wed Aug 7, 2024 1:27 am

Here’s a hypothetical that is within the realm of possibility this year:

1. The Warriors are outside the playoffs, and decide to go for a rebuild.
2. Steph will only be traded to a contender that he wants to play for. Him and Lebron may have also discussed this in Paris.
3. The Lakers will do a 4 for 1 type deal to match salaries, and then go fill their bench with discounted players on the buyout market.

Steph Curry
for
Dalton Knecht, DLo Russell, Rui Hachimura, Gabe Vincent, Max Christie, 2 ‘25 2nds (LAC + LAL), ‘26 1st swap, ‘29 LAL unprotected 1st.

GSW can let DLo expire, or flip him (BKN? ORL?) for a small return.

This years buyout market should be hot, with a number of teams gearing up for the tank. Guys like Schroder (BKN), Fournier (DET), Brogdon (WAS) are going to be interested in an LA championship run.

Imagine:

Steph / Reaves / Lebron / Vando / Davis
Schroder / ? / Reddish / Wood / Hayes

Warriors will end up with a top 10 pick plus a solid young core. The next 2 draft years are very strong, so the Warriors will potentially be setup for a full decade.

Can happen this year.

Highly unlikely. GSW can get more for him elsewhere. Steph would rather go to a relevant team (LAL is likely to be near the bottom of the west by September, or at least in the 9-12 range.) Also LAL would need to pony up more assets including Vando, Reaves, and more picks, to make this appealing for GSW.

Realistically, Steph will not be on the open bidding market. He will have a strong say in where and who he wants to play with.

True, but LAL is not the only team on that list, and they won’t give him away for what you suggested. Any deal that excludes Reaves and only has one unprotected first is a non starter for GSW.

Knecht is along the same mold as Reaves, except younger/cheaper. Yeah I think they could change that swap into a 1st.

So it’s
Knecht (recent 1st)
2 future 1sts
2 ‘25 2nds
Players (DLo can be flipped, and Rui is a decent player)

I don’t think Steph will fetch as much as people think of him, because of his limited suitors. Who else is going to get him? His hometown of Charlotte? Play for Pop in San Antonio? I don’t think so.

OKC would love to have him, so would LAC, and others. GSW will not send out Steph just to send him out. Your offer is not realistic.

Detroit already declined Fourniers option, he’s a free agent

This looks like how you would value Bruce Brown.

Lakers would be hard capped at the 2nd apron and have only about $1.8m in space to backfill the minimum required 3 empty roster spots.

GS would be hard capped at the 1st apron and be $1.3m over that hard cap in doing this deal, and would have to waive 4 guys before being able to legally process this type of move.

Seems pretty unrealistic for two teams that both would have severe apron restrictions making such a massive deal midseason.

Any Curry to Lakers trade needs to include Reaves and Rui. It would be insulting not to, in fact, I think it's a necessity to match salary anyway.

Reaves+Rui+Vando+Vincent+LAL29FRP+LAL31FRP+LAL28swap+LAL30swap

This offer is way to close to what has been discussed as the Lakers potentially giving up for Jerami Grant. Surely Steph would land more.

I don't think Curry will move at the age 37, but if he does decide to give it another go, then your deal looks very good.
Maybe instead of 26 swap, unprotect 27 and dump some money on the Jazz.

GS is already hard-capped at the 1st apron. That deal couldn't be done.

Even if Steph demands out, LA doesn't have the assets to get him.

OKC would blow this offer out of the water.
