Spurs/Trail Blazers/Pelicans

Post#1 » by louc1970 » Wed Aug 14, 2024 5:21 pm

Spurs help out Blazers by taking Ayton.

Spurs trade Collins/Johnson
Spurs receive Ayton/Murray
Spurs move Wemby to the PF spot where he will dominate nearly everyone he plays against. Ayton gets another fresh start but with a friend/teaching PG in Paul. Murray adds defense to an already defensive lineup.

Blazers trade Ayton/Murray/Williams/Simons
Blazers receive Johnson/Collins/Ingram
Team remade in a quick move. Blazers move off of Ayton and get a back up center so they can move Williams. Ingram gets to work with a growing PG in Henderson. Sharpe gets to move back expectations (I don't think he will ever meet). Johnson is on a team friendly deal.

Pelicans trade Ingram, pick(s)
Pelicans receive Simons/Williams 3

Bringing in Simons allows Pelicans to look for a partner for McCollum. Williams give them a center that does not need the ball on offense but will hustle and hold down the spot.

Missing details on the in and out. Simons and Williams not shown in Blazers section, picks aren't shown where they're going?

Zero interest in Ingram.

POR has no business making a move for a guy like him at this point in the rebuild.

POR needs high end talent in the draft, above all else. If that means POR is stuck with Ayton until his contract expires so be it.

Even the FNT concluded Wemby is better at the five. It's not a compromise that he play there. And I do wish folks would stop trying to find ways to trade Keldon Johnson. He plays an important role on the team as sixth man and swing-forward. It's not something that can just be sorted out later.

Deal is dead on arrival.

Also the idea of the Pelicans trading Ingram for McCollum 2.0 is almost impressive in how much it doesn't address their needs.

Spurs aren't moving Wemby to PF. That won't help him dominate because opposing teams are not required to guard him with their PF. Real life isn't 2K. Having Wemby play next to another big just clogs the lane and makes it easier to defend him. We already saw this play out last season.

Not to mention RW3 and Simons is a really bad return for Ingram let alone Ingram AND a pick.

What this guy said in the other thread.

For me it is more about getting out of Ayton a year early. If Ingram plays well, great, he can be offered a realistic deal. If not, he walks and the second year of Ayton is off the books.

Pass for POR.

This does not address needs.

What difference does it make to Portland if they get out of Ayton a year early or not?

Pass for POR.

Some other team can play BI near max money to play 50 games a year.

This has Portland taking in a ton of money right (adding more than $34M) after getting below tax. If this is even legal, no way they are making this deal. They are tanking, they have no business adding this much payroll and going back into tax.

If Henderson/Sharpe/Avdija/Clingan show enough improvement it gives Portland $$$ to entice a free agent. Ayton is the most expensive player they have.

Portland doesn’t draw free agents. You got to go back to the 90s to find them getting guys line Brian Grant and Rod Strickland. But again, this future money is nothing compared to the massive amount of money they are taking in for the next year and tax. It just doesn’t make financial sense plus I don’t think it is legal anyway, you have them taking in about double the salary than they are sending out.

POR does not sign quality FA.

If there is a realistic path to getting a big name free agent they can always make cap room in the offseason by dumping Ayton with a pick, which will be easier and cheaper in 2025 offseason. There's no reason to do it now.

Agreed, but that also won’t happen. But in the weird world where Portland believes they can land a worthy free agent, that option would be easier and cheaper.

Financially Portland saves money. I mistakenly left out Simons/Williams part leaving Portland.
The picks are up to interpretation on how many go from NOP to Portland (assuming a 25 FRP and a later 28 or 29)

It’s not just POR, a lot of the smaller non-glamour market teams are in the same boat.

POR adds talent through trades and the draft. Capspace is rarely useful for signing FA.

I get it. It is a shame, but I think with the new deal, the market will shift. Big market teams are not going to have the space to sign every player they want. If players want the money, they will have to go to the smaller markets. However those teams had better have a good system in place ready to win.
