CLE-GSW-DET: resolving Okoro's contract

CLE trades: Isaac Okoro (S+T)
in: Moses Moody
Cleveland trades Okoro for a cheaper option. Moody is also a higher-volume shooter on a per-minute basis, so may be a better fit than Okoro.

GSW trades: Moses Moody, Gary Payton III, 2026 ATL 2nd, 2028 ATL 2nd, 2029 GSW 2nd
in: Isaac Okoro
Golden State gets a G/F who is more fully realized that Moody and probably more capable of earning minutes in their crowded rotation. They also open up a roster spot - not sure if that is hugely appealing or not. This should allow them to pay Okoro ~$14 million in his first year.

DET trades: nothing
in: Gary Payton III, 2026 ATL 2nd, 2028 ATL 2nd, 2029 GSW 2nd
Detroit gets three good seconds for cap space.

Detroit should just keep moore and the 2nd themselves? or just cut moore and keep the 2nd

I think GSW should be looking at getting a big instead of another 2/3 player though

Yah, you are right, Utah should be cut out. I thought they might like to preserve a bit of cap space and a roster spot, but they still have the room MLE if they want to make a trade later. Editing.

I'd just take Payton and the seconds. The Pistons could have Moody.

GS really has plenty of forward options already. I'd also argue that Payton and Moody each have upside above Okoro for next season's performance. While Okoro's more of a sure thing than either his offensive limitations keep him from being that valuable and with GS's roster I'm not sure he's above a 10th man either.

Gary Payton II is 31-years old and has a career average of 5.2 ppg. If GS doesn't want to give Okoro the contract he wants, I get it, but the only player who has even a possibility of being a two-way player in this trade is Okoro.

Not sure about 3 seconds for a guy who likely doesn’t beat out Wiggins for the starting 3 spot and paying him $14 mil a year.

I honestly don't see much chance of Okoro being a two-way player. A strong defender who can make wide open 3's at a passible rate and nothing else on offense isn't a 2-way player.

When healthy and in-form Payton is more impactful than Okoro has ever been. Obviously there's big health concerns but (IMO obviously) the best-case scenario for Payton is above Okoro. I 'd also argue that Moody brings more offensive upside over Okoro.

More notably, Curry/Heild/Podz/Melton have the guard minutes and Kunminga/Wiggins at SF. I'd have Okoro behind all of them. $14M/yr is way too much for a 3rd string option.

No way the Warriors are paying all that for Okoro. If GPII stays healthy, he'll be the same sort of thing as Okoro anyway, and fits what GS do (and Steph and the guys love him). Even if there is an upgrade of player from Okoro to GPII (Debateable whenm healthy), it's not Moody and 3 x 2nds.

Saying that a healthy GPII would be the same sort of thing as Okoro feels like a stretch. Payton is 31, Okoro is still only 23. Okoro provides better size and more defensive versatility, and arguably better spacing. I see Okoro trending up, and Payton trending down.

As a Cavs fan I’d do this if Payton came to Cleveland and Niang went to Detroit instead.

This is mostly interesting because it gives the Cavs ~$3.9m in room under the tax, giving the Cavs flexibility with roster spot #14 as well. It's effectively trading Okoro for Moody and possibly Yabusele?

Seems light for Cleveland. Okoro is a good defensive player while Moody would be trapped behind other players.

I'd rather bet on Moody's improvement, keep GPII and the picks. I do like the concept of consolidating players to try to improve. GS's rotation is clogged.

I think I'd do this from a Pistons perspective. If we had a better offer for using our cap space than this then something likely would've happened by now.

Best case scenario GPII shows something and we can then flip him to a contender at the deadline for an asset or two. Worst case scenario he's dead weight but we pick up a few seconds for cap space we weren't going to use anyway.

I think Cavs will either resign Okoro to either the QO or a smaller 3 year deal that starts year 1 just under the QO. Playoff teams likely wouldn't have much interest in Okoro. All of the capspace is used up at this point across the league. A rebuilding team such as the Nets could potentially be a team to have interest so perhaps a trade with them at the deadline?

The Cavs which is desperate for wing defense is not resigning Okoro to more than the QO, why would the Warriors trade picks and players for the privilege of signing him for $14 mil a season? The Cavs have literally no one at 3. Okoro as bad as he is would be their best SF. And they still don't want him.
