This is inspired by a previous thread around NOP needing a C, and Poeltl being a good fit.



NOP gets: J Poeltl, C Zeller
TOR gets: D Hunter, Y Missi, K Bufkin
ATL gets: CJ McCollum


Pelicans get 2 centers to plug their big man need.
Atlanta gets a starting SG for a playoff run.
Toronto cashes out on Poeltl by taking on salary + youth.

Between Trae/Bogi/DD, i dont see Hawks wanting CJ at all. I dont mind the price NOP pays for Poeltl here, but Raps are gonna have to eat CJ themselves or find another team to dump him on as i dont think the Hawks are gonna be ok with it.

Possibly the Lakers for Dlo/Vando. CJ gets a little underrated as i think he had a pretty good season last year and he could probably help the Lakers be more competitive for top 6 in a tough West.

I don't know the rules but are the Pelicans allowed to trade for Zeller after sending him out in a sign and trade during the off-season?

Trade sends Atlanta solidly into the tax, and maybe even has issues with their hard cap at the first apron after backfilling the open spots. Do they want to do that for McCollum when they already have a solid amount of guys to play the 1-3? And sacrifice development to just compete for a play in?

They are not.

Honestly a simpler deal with CJ to Toronto makes more sense. He can start at SG next to Quickley and cover the backup PG minutes as well. A Trae/CJ starting backcourt is a defensive disaster. Messi can backfill some center depth then it's just a matter of minor pieces (I believe Toronto has more luxury tax wiggle room than Atlanta) and extra incentive for Toronto.

This adds ~8 mill in salary to the Pels and puts them in the tax and i dont see a simple way for them to fix that in this deal. Poeltl/Boucher is easier

1. Puts them into the tax which is a non starter.
2. This offseason has been about adding size, length, defense around Trae...CJ McCullum is going in the opposite direction and won't be a good pairing with Trae in the backcourt. Hawks are also high on Bufkin.

Toronto is going to need picks instead of Bufkin. Bufkin has been overrated for a while now, he hasn't gotten any meaningful NBA minutes. The Raptors likely look for picks and an expiring. Missi might be good but that's TBD. As the season goes on the NOP will desperate to get a C and another team is going to take advantage. The Raptors were in that same position and got fleeced by the Spurs, why would it be different now?

Pass for the hawks this is the complete opposite of what you want around trae. This is going straight back into the problem you had with Murray but a worse player imo with less size, rebounding, and defense. We have our SG already in Daniels or Risacher as both of them are off ball guys that play off trae's strengths. Risacher actually models his game off Klay Thompson which is exactly the type you want next to a player like Trae and Stepth.

Poeltl isnt clearly better than Gafford. The Mavs were desperate and WAS was ok with a back end of the 1st round draft pick in a weak year.

Masai overpaid. It doesnt mean the Pels need to. They might, but that would just be a poor decision. Solid role playing C's are usually cheap in the NBA
