MEM (RWIII) - PHI (Santi) - POR (FRP)

MEMPHIS
Out: Santi Aldama
In: Robert Williams III

PHILADELPHIA
Out: KJ Martin / '31 PHI FRP
In: Santi Aldama

PORTLAND
Out: Robert Williams III
In: KJ Martin / '31 PHI FRP

Reasoning:
Memphis trade a depth piece for a starting center.

Philadelphia trades their capital for a playoff rotation PF.

Portland gets draft capital for a player that isn't on their long term plans.

This deal would hard cap Memphis at the first apron by taking in more salary than they send out, which they would go over by $3+m, so it’s not legal.

Otherwise, I can’t see Memphis going into the tax like this for RW3 coming off of injury.

Pretty bad for Memphis, RW3 is a negative asset as of now, the guy just can´t stay healthy

Neither Memphis nor Philadelphia wins here, so... Portland fan says yeah!

If RW is healthy, he’s worth than this.

If not he’s worth less then.

Smart money bets against his health.

IMO the challenge for Portland is that if Williams is healthy, where does he get minutes? Presumably Ayton and Clingan get all the center minutes. Playing him as a PF probably doesn't look as good so doesn't help any showcasing for trade value.

Of course if he's never really healthy than it doesn't matter.

Well Clingan is a rookie big so he may just log garbage minutes for the first few months if Ayton and Williams are both healthy and playing well. I also would think the Blazers would be playing Williams on a minutes restriction and keeping him out of back to backs and such, so slowly start to get the rook some more time in those situations.

Although the chatter out of Portland is something about playing Ayton at PF at the high post like we used to use Aldridge. Ayton does have a decent mid-range, but in general its just a poor shot to make a steady diet of unless you are magnificent at it so color me skeptical of how effective that will be. Although to be honest we are also hoping for another tank year so maybe a less efficient pairing is the strategy. Lets go triple towers.

It's tough to see a top-10 pick on a rebuilding team not get a regular rotation role, and Clingan's not that super young (a two and done vs one).

I could see a bunch of Ayton at PF following the lead of Houston running Porter at PG (and Sochan at PG for SA last year) as a (very, very) slightly obscured tank move.

Yeah, Clingan needs minutes. I’m fine with guys out of position for experimental/tanking sake. RWIII could get the smaller minutes of the 3 minutes deserving centers given his health. If he starts proving worth more, that may be the time to trade him.

Memphis needs to unload more here. What contracts do they have that they could do without?

Konchar 6 million would do it but we’re not interested in Timelord. That time has passed.

RW3 is not a negative asset, that is ridiculous.

He is a minutes managed player. Yep there is an injury risk, however if\when healthy he is very impactful, especially for a playoff team. Still young, very manageable contract and proven to be impactful in playoff games. That has value, even with injury concerns.

He´s a 27yo player, not young anymore. He played 215 games out of 492 games in six seasons. Availability is a skill and he´s probably in the 100th percentile. This is not NFL, where you can have situational players that will be called-up only to kick a FG. That´s a rulebook negative asset.

He can be a positive player, when he’s playing, and still be a negative asset. :dontknow:

Alternate proposal:

MEM gets Olynyk
PHI gets Konchar and Aldama
TOR gets McCain and KJ Martin

Memphis is increasing the payroll while getting a downgrade in talent, no thanks

Any thoughts what type of player Memphis would want. I assumed they would be looking for a starting C.

We are not looking for a starting center because we have one now in Edey until otherwise. Santi allows us to have two offensively versatile bigs on the floor at once we are not trading him unless it’s for a clear upgrade and we can’t extend him. Cam, Kuz but likely DFS as targets.
