Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe this means he cannot be traded this year?

I believe his contract extension would still fit under extend and trade regulations (4 or less years under contract and his added year salary is less than 120% of his last year already under contract), so there’s no legal restriction on him being traded.

Good. I hope he finishes where he started. GSW has the most important player in franchise history locked up another year. He has another $60M locked up, And they can start planning his statue.

Was wondering why this hasn't happened until now.

Don't they have limits on contract amounts for the elders?

not amounts. Same max rules as any other player. Just years. He falls prey to the over 38 rule which is why this extension is only for one year.

Right. And the over-38 rule means the contract can't be more than 3 years total (two existing + one extension)?

He can finish his career there, get the statue, etc. without giving him $60M at the age of 38. His career earnings through 2026 will be 473M. When is enough, enough?

Steph has earned our owner, no exaggeration, billions of dollars. If he wants to keep playing until he's 50, Lacob should keep paying him.

I wonder the reason why so many posters are angry at the players(the drivers of the revenue) for making millions while the team governors make billions? It's just a bizarre thing to me. I mean I know some of the reasons and they are super ugly, but sometimes its like they just are so busy resenting someone for making a bunch of money "for playing a game" they ignore a player like Steph is simply making what the market dictates. It's not charity the Warriors are giving him lol.

I mean come on Laimbeer.

Lacob bought the Warriors for LESS THAN CURRY's careen earnings at 450 Million. They are currently valued at 7.7 Billion.

The whole idea that athletes are paid too much just screams "I don't understand the sheer magnitude and societal trash Billionaire's are to a society".

It wasn't a rant about players being overpaid in general. I am open to an argument they should make even more.

But in this forum we constantly question if a team has overpaid a particular player. Salary cap and all that. Steph is almost certainly going to be paid more than he is worth on the floor in that season. We've seen stars (Dirk comes to mind) take less to help their team compete.

Yeah he's going to be overpaid (relative to the cap/tax lines for team competitiveness). You can certainly argue that it's like late-career Kobe, where the off-court value of Curry and the good feelings of him being a one-team guy are worth the extra money and he takes the extra money in exchange for staying on a team that won't be a title contender (and much like Kobe, he has had a lot of talent around him at other parts of his career - it's not a KG on Minny situation).

Curry is underpaid now, basically every MVP calibre player in the league is, especially young ones, he has been for most of his career, the only other compensation possible is contract length, and even that is capped at 38 y/o.
I also don't agree it's a forgone conclusion he will be overpaid at age 38, it's only 2 years from now...

I'm not here to defend billionaires. If public funding of a new Browns' stadium comes up on a refetendum, I'm a definite no. That said, he has to (a) sell the team to realize the gain; and (b) find a buyer who agrees with that evaluation. He may not.

Dallas-Ft. Worth is the 5th largest market in the country. SF-Oakland is the 10th. Luka is a decade younger than Steph in terms of projecting future TV earnings. The Mavs sold for $4B.

A lot of the new TV revenue is due to gambling partnerships that may, or may not, be subject to future regulation in terms of ads. The group that bought the Celtics is looking to sell before the full extent of their luxury tax penalties kick in. As is being demonstrated in Minny, it can be hard to put together the money required to purchase an NBA franchise.

I'm also skeptical that Lacob made that much while owning the Warriors. The cap is set at half of BRI and the Warriors' after-luxury-tax payroll has been roughly twice the cap for a long time. The group, and it is a group, that owns the Warriors actually had a capital call when they built that new arena. The minority owners were non-plussed.

Anyway, whether all these players are going to be worth the opportunity costs of a max slot worth of cap space as they approach 38 is certainly open to debate. Some teams, and players, are going to get stuck in a less than ideal situation.

GSW market calculations include San Jose and the rest of the valley...

This is exactly right. Late career Kobe versus Dirk or Duncan who took about half their previous salary in similar situations. Hell, Duncan was still good in his final few seasons and took 1.8M per.
