DEC 15: Robert Williams for Obi Toppin

POR trades: Robert Williams
IND trades: Obi Toppin

Portland swaps a center for a power forward. Indiana gets a backup center who can provide starting-quality minutes and fits their uptempo style. For Indiana, part of the assumption is that they could use a backup center upgrade and they want to open more minutes for Jarace Walker by freeing up some at one of the positions he plays.

No for both teams, Rob is just cooked from injuries, sad to say because I love Rob. Nobody is trading positive value for him at this point.

Pretty reasonable, obviously. Though, this may be mitigated if he plays some games for Portland and looks good (which may or may not happen). If it does not happen, this deal doesn't have any legs.

POR has to hope that RW rebuilds his value enough to make it worthwhile to trade him or keep him.

Williams is very injury prone and I think Obi is on the rise after a bad start with the Knicks.

Blazers do this if only to get RWIII off the books. I can't see them passing up.

I guess an assumption would be that he plays and shows he is healthy before Dec.15.

You are right though it’s tough for Portland. If he can get right he is a game changer, but that’s a big if.

I like the gamble for Indy. If RW could be healthy enough to give 15 good minutes a game that would be huge.

Portland should decline simply because of contracts and mildly due to tanking. I get what the OP is going for in terms of roster balance, but Portland needs to be thinking long term. We need to be tanking, and less long term contracts for the sake of flexibility is preferred with the exception of players who are actually part of the long term rebuild plan.

He is cheaper per year and a shorter contract than Obi. With neither being rebuild pieces, Rob is preferred.

Sure, but RWIII is almost dead salary and Obi Toppin is productive and can be moved, so I'd still do that for the Blazers

Then make it a 3 team trade, but this trade has us bringing in a decent amount of long term salary which is a bad direction for the team. See my post above the one you quoted.

Why does Obi keep coming up here? The Pacers signed him to his current contract less than two months ago. Barring the unlikely event that the Pacers FO had simply forgotten Walker was on the team, I doubt they're looking to get off Toppin's contract already.

Isaiah Jackson was a fine backup center for the Pacers last season. Even if he hadn't been, Williams' chronically poor health makes him an inherently unreliable player. Nobody is going to depend upon him playing any role for their team, and rightly so.

I believe the Pacers would decline. The only player I would be interested in is Avidja. Not sure why Portland traded for him as it goes against their rebuild, but I doubt the are looking to move him yet.

Avdija is 24 years old and a 2 way guy on a great contract.

Not looking to move him.

You said he goes against the rebuild. His age, talent, and skill set fit perfectly with the rebuild...
That was JRoy's point

If Portland fails to get a top 4-5 pick in this upcoming draft with both Flagg and Bailey sitting there then trading for Avidja would be a massive failure on the organization and if by the grace of God you are able to snag Flagg or Bailey you sure don't let Avidja or anyone else get in their way of their development.

Sure.

You draft the best talent available and then worry about fit.

You don’t trade the best player on your team, who is young and on a great contract, and hope to maybe draft a replacement.

You may be in for an unpleasant surprise if you believe that Avdija is the best player on Portland's roster. He's smart, he's a solid passer and defender, and he's able to do some attacking off the dribble. He's also not great at anything and he has only a single season of track record as a decent perimeter shooter, and that on relatively low volume.

If you believe that Avdija is the best player on Portland's roster, then I believe you're destined for severe disappointment.

Unlikely.

I know exactly how terrible the Blazers are.

Who do you think the best Blazer player will be this year?
