Cavs / Lakers simple swap

Post#1 » by JJ_PR » Sun Oct 13, 2024 3:22 am

Cavs get: Rui Hachimura and Jaxson Hayes
Lakers get: Max Strus

Why?
Cleveland adds a wing and a back-up big.
Lakers add a shooter and save some cash.

PG: Darius Garland / Ty Jerome / Craig Porter Jr.
SG: Donovan Mitchell / Caris LeVert / Sam Merrill
SF: Rui Hachimura / Isaac Okoro / Jaylon Tyson
PF: Evan Mobley / Dean Wade / Georges Niang
C: Jarrett Allen / Jaxson Hayes / Tristan Thompson
Coach: Kenny Atkinson

The Cavs like Strus. More than Okoro. More than LeVert. It's why Strus starts.

Also, the Cavs are close enough to the tax line that they can duck under it. They're not taking on extra money in a trade like this.

Jarret Allen isn’t winning you anything. Garland won’t show up in the playoffs. Mobley is a glorified dunk man. Mitchell has some experience but is a liability on defense. To me, the Cavs are a treadmill team.

The Lakers are really high on Knecht so there's no reason for them to make this trade. Their best +/- lineups all have AD/Lebron/Rui. Not to mention Hayes is their only healthy backup big. Lakers could potentially trade any of their non AD/Lebron players but this deal doesn't improve them.

I could see something like LeVert + Merrill for Rui.

I don't really see a trade fit between Cle and the Lakers. Lakers need a 2 way wing and also a big bulky backup C to help out AD. Cavs have some of the same needs. LeVert and Merrill don't really help the Lakers who are currently fairly stacked at guard with Reaves, DLo, Knecht, Christie, and last year's FRP Hood-Schifino also looks much improved in preseason.

I think Rui could give the Cavs the kind of big wing they've been missing defensively and the flexibility to play with just one of their bigs...but losing Strus seems like it would hurt them more than Rui helped. They have other shooters, but not ones who are as solid as Strus defensively...and they have other defenders, but not ones that scare me as much as a shooter.

While the Lakers might hope Christie and JHS are rotation-caliber players this year, the reality is they combined for 5.6ppg last year. It's a big leap to start counting on them for even backup minutes. Knecht is a rookie, same thing. I see two rotation guards on the Lakers, not five.
