Classic money trade. I realize these bore the forum and we have have a sizable minority who still don't get why rich men like to save millions of dollars, these continue to be smart deals that benefit the teams involved.

Win/Win

I like the Kings keeping a roster spot open and reducing some salary if they decided McDaniels isn't a rotation piece. Some team will likely pick him up that needs forward depth and someone that doesn't murder you as a 10th man.

Sean Cunningham reporting this as "part one of something to come" for Sacramento. Not sure what to make of that.. A Cam Johnson/DFS/Kuzma type deal or something smaller?

Probably converting an e10 or two-way, no?

It's possible. I've been really impressed with Isaac Jones through SL and preseason so far, definitely wouldn't be mad at converting him to a standard deal and go fishing for another 2 way guy. It took a couple years of development and proving it for Keon to be converted though even when most fans were saying it should happen so there's precedent this FO takes a more patient approach with two way guys.

I think the money this saves us allows two more veteran minimum guys to be added without going over the first apron, so that's possible as well but the way Cunningham worded it makes it sound like something bigger than that. Not expecting much but will be interesting to see what happens.

You sure? I thought they were below the tax before trading McD.

He was useable salary in a trade. To pay to cut him means there’s definitely something else coming or tax issues. This isn’t how to open up a spot.

Just according to spotrac but maybe they haven't updated?

If that's the case then they are $5.8m below tax for 13 players.

$1m below the tax but $4.9m below the 1st apron which I think was the intent. Maintaining a bit more flexibility for trades since the last two roster spots can be filled with vet minimums and still be below the apron.

Given the draft capital they sent to dump Barnes, I'm a little surprised they couldn't dump both of them in one transaction.

I don’t understand this. The Kings going forward are a tax team. Why would they start the clock on the repeater tax this year for two end of bench guys?

Short of dumping Huerter for cap space or splitting his deal into smaller contracts, it's unavoidable that we will be in the tax this year. But by staying below the 1st apron we maintain the flexibility in taking back more salary than we send out in future trades this season or at the deadline. The minimum roster size is 14 too so in this scenario we likely would be keeping that 15th spot open any way.

Optimistic.

I think the Kings put themselves in a position to make one of two moves at the deadline. Cut 1-2 Million and get under the tax, or add salary below the 1st Apron.

Kings Fans will say it's the 2nd, in hopes their ownership is willing to spend [All teams fans convince them of this].

The reality is I doubt Kings ownership wants to pay the Tax for a 42-win, Play-In team.

For the fans sake I hope they are a 50-win caliber team.

Are you sure? Without McD a quick add up seems like they fall below 170m.

The point is a team that will be a tax team going forward would be stupid to be just a tad over the tax for this final year of affordability. Why start the clock for bench scrubs? That makes no sense.

I'm not sure your numbers are correct.

$150m for Fox, Monk, Huerter, DeMar, Sabonis, Murray, Lyles
$15m for Ellis, Jones, Carter, Len, McLaughlin, Orlando

That's $165m for 13 players. Tax line is $171m and 1st apron is $178m.

It also means they were below the tax before the trade, which is what I thought.

So why use draft capital to make this move? Something comes next.

Why not include Spurs in a 3-team trade for that next move?

You'd only do this if you wanted to make this move regardless of follow up trade success.

So maybe Kings make a trade or they pick up a couple of free agents: Fultz, DSJ, McDermott, Crowder, Covington, Biyombo, McGee

Not sure on the numbers, I'm going off what Spotrac is reporting but I could be just misinterpreting. It's already updated with the McDaniels trade and has us at $169m tax allocations and $173m apron allocations. Not sure where that extra $4m is coming from either but that's what they have.

With the numbers your are saying, then they can fill the two roster spots and still be below the tax but shouldn't have had to make this move. I'm by no means a cap expert so I could totally be wrong.

McD had value as a 4.7m expiring contract. He provided flexibility at the deadline. To pay draft capital to remove that flexibility means something is up and it’s likely not at the 14-15 man level. You don’t trade a second rounder to swap out the 15 man.
