This feels like a pretty big overpay to me.

What do Orlando gain by doing this so soon? Before last season he was being debated as a potential bust so he's only got one year of production behind him. I feel they should have waited to see how this season plays out if they were just going to pay the most they can for Suggs for 5 years.

No player option for year 5? Is that the compromise?

Im still on Suggs Island.

But this is way too much for a defensive guard, so his offense really needs to come along.

This looks a bit expensive considering what he has shown, but don't think they had much leverage? might not want to have Suggs hitting free agency and having him be unhappy.

If he cant become a 16-18ppg scorer on great efficiency while retaining his elite defense, this is going to be a tough deal to swallow.

I am on Suggs island though - I think he hits those metrics this year.

Suggs was good last year, but I'm worried about him regressing to how bad he was before year 3. Would have waited until RFA.

Yeah. They clearly think he's their Jrue Holiday/Derrick White, but he has a ways to go before hitting that level.

seems to follow the $$$ for other defensive stalwarts signed this offseason (white, OG) and Holiday last year. Teams are really paying a premium for sharpshooting all nba defensive players these days

Not sure I'd call a career 42% FG/33% 3pt shooter a "sharpshooter" just yet.

If he can keep up his %s from last year on more volume then this deal will likely turn out just fine. If not, it could get ugly.

KCP at 31 just signed for $22/mil year. Suggs is a similar player, but i guess they see more offensive upside. They are playing him at PG this year, so i guess the front office will look smart or very dumb.

i thought they would wait until end of the year and see if he could shoot well again

White, OG, and Jrue have all shown a lot more offensively, no? And I don't see how we believe Suggs is now a 40% 3-pt guy. Obviously if he is, then that makes this deal look a lot better.

I love the guy. I believe he will figure it out. I just don't think he is like young Jason Kidd where he did so many things at such at elite level that it didn't matter that it took a decade for the shooting to show up. And its not just the shooting, he also doesn't threaten the rim enough, meaning he's not generating enough open 3's for others.

Won't matter in the end if Wagner ever takes the big step, but I'm not sure he's ever going to do that either. So the Magic are left with a below average first option in Banchero and two very expensive guys who aren't 2nd options. The defense can be great, but that team just has a 2nd round ceiling.

Still wish they would go get a veteran star and not trust the kids will develop. SGA makes OKC so different. They don't have anything like that.

somehow this wasn't even the worst contract given to a guard named jalen drafted in 2021 today

Orlando better hope he takes a leap otherwise, you're paying Jrue Holiday money for a knock-off Marcus Smart.

wow. not very high on the young team that improves every year huh? below average 1st option in Banchero (at only year 2). Franz already a 20 ppg 2 way player, Suggs healthy and already 2nd team All NBA defense, and then adding KCP. Like the old Magic GM Otis Smith, I like this team

I love the Magic actually. Love how they play, like almost every player on the team, think the coach gets a ton out of the guys.

But the reality is with rare, rare exceptions a team can't win without an elite player at the top. And the league has chosen a very offensive path which makes it harder for them to be an old Duncan Spurs or Wallace squared Pistons.

I know they are young. But they are young. And guys tend to peak offensively at 27+. I could easily see Banchero as a first option on a fringe contender in 5 years. I can't see it today. I hope I'm wrong though.

Yet Gary Trent Jr plays for the minimum.

My random thought of the day was that if you could combine the extension Jalens into a single player, that might be the best player in the league

Not a fan of the early payday here. What are they gaining?

If Suggs comes out and averages 16/6.5 and shoots 40% again this year is he getting the MAX?
Whereas if he comes out and averages 14 and shots 36% is he signing for less?
