Chi & LAL: White, Vuc, Craig for Russell, Rui, Hayes

by drosestruts
Chicago in: D'Angelo Russel, Rui Hachimura, and Jaxson Hayes
Lakers in: Coby White, Nikola Vucevic, and Torrey Craig
Why for the Bulls:
Bulls made a concerted effort to get younger this offseason and this continues them on that path by adding a young 4 and 5 in Rui and Hayes and the expiring contract of Russell (who they may look to flip in a separate deal or he could be a buyout candidate). Bulls have a lot of guard youth, this helps balance out the roster.
Bulls depth:
Giddey/Ball/Russell
LaVine/Ayo
Williams/Phillips/Terry
Hachimura/Buzelis
Smith/Hayes
Why for the Lakers:
Get a young player in White who just finished 2nd in MIP last year and is under contract longer than Russell as well as two veteran players to bolster their depth with known quantities. Vuc is a center that can eat up minutes as needed and provides better big man depth. Craig is a vet 3&d player.
Depth:
White/Vincent
Reaves/Christie/Reddish
Craig/Knecht
James/Wood
Davis/Vucevic

I think if the Bulls were willing to trade White they should just take the best future pick they can get for him. Not use him to dump Vuc and get some non-difference makers rotation players.

Agreed.
White is by far the best player involved. I don't see why Chicago does this.

I would hope that Coby could get back much more than that

I don't like giving up Coby mainly because they're going to have to replace him when DLo and Ball expire. Don't kid yourself into thinking Ayo is a star in the making. This is also a deal that makes keeping Lavine almost a must even if you somehow think about tanking. Take a look at the lineup without Zach and wonder where you're trading him and are you just getting rid of his years and salary for more players and the same dollars. Now you've got a big hole with likely no 2025 pick. So you're trusting AK to start a new rebuild? Not me
You give up the asset in White to move Vucevic but Rui is a good player not great while Russell is leaving. The only part I really like is that Rui is more of a 4 and Patrick can become the 3. I like Hayes and am glad to get him but I'm only able to HOPE he's a decent backup since he's never played extended minutes anywhere.
I think the Lakers need to add a pick if by your count the Bulls are sending them TWO starters.
This is decent but only if the Bulls do trade Lavine and get back more than the filler that is all most people act like he's worth.

The Lakers are sending the Bulls TWO starters too. I don't see anyway the Lakers would send a 1st round pick here with their draft pick dearth.

I do agree with others that coby is the best player in the deal
But I think that there's a cost to getting off Vuc's deal and that that value does then come out even.
Many would prefer the pick route - i'd like to see the Bulls balance their roster with people around the same age.
Rui fits the young core from an age perspective and from a position perspective.
The core of the trade in my mind is Coby for Rui - I tried to balance that value by including an expiring DLo and young Hayes for Vuc
I think Lakers adding a 1st is too much
Also for the Bulls - there's a lot of guards. A lot of Bulls fans look at that and say "Trade LaVine" which has proven to not be easy. Some think he can play himself into having a trade market, but I don't think so. Everyone knows who Zach the player is. There issue seems to primarily be Zach the contract - which isn't changing (well I guess it will change in length as time goes on).
I like Coby, but if the Bulls want better balance of their lineups, and want to get value in return - the best option right now is Coby.

To be honest I don't like this for the Lakers. Vuc is useless because he'll either come off the bench in spot minutes or force AD to the 5. They lose Rui, which isn't ideal, just so they can upgrade from DLo to C.White. is that even much of an upgrade?

Not looking to move Rui in this deal
No need for Vuc
There are 2 non Lavine deals between LAL and Chi that make sense:
Vando and Vincent for Lonzo. We add some 2nds?
Why for LAL: Get a defensive minded guard to pair next to AR or Reaves. Big risk with injuries, but nice upside. Vando is also an injry risk with upside though and now I am unsure who guards wings for us
Why for Chi: Get some 2nds on an expiring Lonzo and take a gamble on Vando
Other trade is Dlo, Vincent, and JHS (liekly a 3 teamer) + 29 1st. Any more needed? for Lonzo and White
Why for LAL: 1st reason+ a scoring guard off the bench. But the question is, how good is White? Is he even better than Dlo, same level, or a bit worse? He had 1 playoff series a few years back and wasnt great
Why for CHI: Get a 1st and other assets (JHS) or something from a 3rd team.

If this is what Coby White goes for, I'd like for the Spurs to pick up the phone... take Wemby, Vassell and Castle out and see what piques their interest... also I wouldn't give up an unprotected pick.

Chicago are poorly run but they ain't that stupid to give up their most valuable asset (Coby White) for 3 scrubs from The Lakers

Defensively sure. Dlo a 20 and 7 player on a bad team. White 19 and 5.

Well we shouldnt be moving Rui and Dlo for White
Need to be moving picks
What is the right deal?

Yes, on both ends of the court.
I see Dlo rated out higher on EPM last year than White
White better on defense, but Dlo rated out better on offense
But Whites role got bigger later on and seemed to shine
The question is what is he worth and would Chi move him?

Rui looking too good to move right now.
Defense looking solid, he's started pulling down OREBs and he's been more aggressive offensively.
Lakers will move DLo and picks to upgrade I think.
