Pacers need a back-up center

Both iJackson and Wiseman have had Achilles surgery and are likely out for the season. we have small ball options on the second unit with Toppin playing the 5. two-way player Freeman can also be a small 5. but we really need a real back-up 5. we're still in win-now mode so I don't see us trading a rotation player - Haliburton, Nembhard, Maturin, Siakam, Turner, McConnell, Toppin, Walker - I'm personally okay moving Nesmith to get away from the tax line but I suspect most Pacer fans would say no. Sheppard has played well and Furphy is totally unknown. Johnson is more of a coach than a player. that's 12 and the two injured centers makes 14. we have an open spot.
I think we're looking for a veteran backup rather than a prospect. ideas?

Duop Reath? Plays a bit like a quite poor mans Turner (IE floor spacer, decent switch defender).

Don't know a thing about him. what's your asking price? a 2nd or more?

I think PDX would want 2 SRP. He has an in-demand skillset (Stretch C) who isnt a sieve on D and is cheap for this year and the next 2.

I think taking him into the BAE and just sending out a pick is legal but has bad tax consequences. we'd probably need to include salary. Would we give up on Sheppard or Furphy? Would we offer Nesmith for an even better center?

I mentioned in the Thoughts thread, Rick Carlisle called Dwight Powell one the his most fav guys he ever coached. But dont see a viable way for the 2 teams to make a trade

KP wont give up a youngster for a stopgap IMO.
Why not just use Wiseman as the salary ballast?
Reath for Wiseman + 2 SRP?
Then could PDX not simply buy out Wiseman and he resigns w/ IND on a 2-way and gets his rehab paid for?

They closed the trade + release + re-sign loophole a couple CBAs ago.

I think that is only possible after 12/15

Probably a Wiseman, cash, and a 2nd offer, but yeah. This would be a decent option for a 3rd/maybe 2nd center. We’d likely still need another guy, too.
Definitely wouldn’t be giving up Sheppard or likely Furphy.

Any interest in Bobby Portis?

I would offer either Reath or Williams for a reasonable price ( a 2nd or two and expiring salary).

Amd Wiseman will be paid too much his year to be eligible to sign a two way anywhere, I believe.

The cost is probably too much? We’d have to deal Obi for him, and at that point, would probably just play Obi at center instead?

Since Wiseman still has a trade restriction until December -> How about James Johnson?
Reath for Johnson + '25 IND 2nd + '28 IND/PHX 2nd

Maybe the Heat would move Thomas Bryant for peanuts and just give Ware his minutes?

Yeah, it’s not the easiest match.
Would either of the following generate any interest?
Bobby + ‘31 1st (some protections on it) for Nesmith
Or
Bobby for Isaiah Jackson + someone who can play this year?

I can see Jackson being moved but Bobby is more 4 than 5 and we're okay at 4.

Would have to rejigger it as it puts Indy into the tax? And even then, Nesmith on his multi year is hard to give up for an expiring Portis? Though, the emergence of Mathurin and Sheppard makes it somewhat possible, so may depend on the protections.

There’s no real salary matching there from Indy to fill that gap. Like, it’d have to be Mathurin or Walker (in addition to Wiseman for salary requirements), and that isn’t happening.
My gut is that Indy is looking at using their remaining tax space on a 15th spot, and then Wiseman’s contract as salary matching on 12/15? I don’t know that they’re making a large deal?
