Lakers-Nets 2.0

Lakers get CamJ, DFS

Nets get Rui, Vando, Gabe, LAL29FRP

Lakers upgrade wings Rui+Vando to CamJ+DFS.

Nets get an unprotected FRP for downgrading wings CamJ+DFS to Rui+Vando and taking on Gabe's deal.

It seems like Nets love Schroeder and Lakers can't really lose the playmaking of DLo without getting a playmaker back.
So this seems like an obvious solution with a wing swap, keeps Nets team structure intact too.

Schroeder, CamT, Vando, Rui, Claxton -- Gabe, Simmons, Ziaire, Jalen, Clowney

Reaves, DFS, CamJ, LeBron, Davis -- DLo, Reddish, Knecht, Hayes

I go back and forth. I think having to eat both Vando and Gabe, and surrender both Cam and DFS might be a bridge too far. If they end up paying Cam Thomas this summer, they're not in a great place as far as cap space.

Nets say no to this.

Two starters to Lakers and cap space lost for one late first rounder is just not a good enough deal.

Late first rounder?

It's the 2029 FRP, no one on the current roster are probably on Lakers for 28-29 season and they have no young prospects besides Knecht.

CamJ+DFS are $38.5m this year, $37m for 25-26 and $23.5m for 26-27

Rui+Vando+Gabe are $38.5m this year, $41m for 25-26, $12.5m for 26-27

DFS is a player option.

He could come off the books next year as his salary isn't all that high and he is free to opt out and pick his team as a free agent.

I think the bigger issue is that I suspect these guys could be traded for expiring contracts, and in Cam's case, a protected 1st. So it really comes down to what the Nets want to do this season and next summer because no one trading for the Vanderbilt or Vincent.

Think Lakers are more than one additional role player away from contention imo. Not sure they trade a unprotected first without gaining two role players.

The Nets are most likely hunting for free agents this Summer and want to clear / save cap space.

If I am running the team I might just want to punt until the following Summer when some big names are available.

With that said, bailing out another team by taking back contracts that do not expire at the end of this season means they need to pay us for it.

Giving up a guy like Cam Johnson means getting a first rounder at a minimum.

Taking back $37 million in cap for next season is not something the Nets will do for free.

The Nets aren't getting an unprotected 1st, especially one that far out, for just Cam Johnson. He's not that guy. They probably aren't getting a protected 1st and an expiring. The Rui for DFS part actually favors the Nets.

It's like I said, if the Lakers actually put that offer on the table, the Nets have a decision to make. Not owning all their picks complicates things.

It seems the Lakers want to have their cake and eat it too.

They want to win now and still hold their future first rounders dear (usually going all in with older players means choosing to let those future picks go).

So my question to you is do the Lakers have any players 28 years old or younger that the Nets would actually want to keep and build their team around?

The three older players that are helping the Nets win now are Schroeder, Cam J, and DFS.

If you want one of them and we are taking contracts back it should be someone that we are not just renting for this year unless we are getting a first rounder.

I posted a trade idea yesterday including the Nets, Lakers, and Mavs (before factoring in draft picks) that seemed to help all three teams but haven't gotten much feedback yet.

Honestly, both teams have decisions to make as I don't see those players turning the Lakers into contenders either. I'm not sure Schroder is a better option than DLo.

What I am relatively confident of is that a 2029 unprotected 1st is almost certainly the best asset that will be offered for Cam Johnson and DFS even if they have to take back some unwanted money. It really comes down to how the Nets view their immediate and midterm future.

Net's could probably get more selling them to different teams, no?

Yes they could. Giving up two good starters for a future Lakers first that may or may not be good, and having to take on those contracts, its not very appealing.

Than an unprotected FRP from a post-LeBron Lakers' that likely has an injury-prone AD as it's focal point? Good luck with that. I really think the Dejounte Murray-to-Atlanta deal really skewed this boards' value of role players in trades.

Nets need more to sell better players to the Lakers AND take on more money and worse fits for BK!
