Portland Trades
DeAndre Ayton C to LAL
Jabari Walker JR FC to LAL
Portland Receives
DeAngelo Russell G from LAL
Gabe Vincent G from LAL
Higher of 2025 LAL/LAC SRP from LAL
New Orleans Trades
CJ McCollum G to LAL
New Orleans Receives
DeAndre Ayton C from PDX
Los Angeles Trades
DeAngelo Russell G to PDX
Gabe Vincent G to PDX
Higher of 2025 LAL/LAC SRP to PDX
Los Angeles Receives
CJ McCollum G from NO
Jabari Walker JR FC from PDX
WHY FOR PORTLAND
They kill the C logjam and cut 25/26 salary from ~34M (Ayton) to ~11M (Gabe). They buy out Russell here as he is not needed and get a SRP in a strong draft.
WHY FOR NEW ORLEANS
They have a huge need at C and while Ayton isnt perfect he fills a need and the cost is quite reasonable. Basically he and CJ have the same deal at the same length - so they shake things up and open more SG PT for Hawkins and company.
WHY FOR LOS ANGELES
I am of mind that they are not taking on deals that go beyond 2026 - I believe they want to be a big FA player at that time. Here they get CJ who is a on-court improvement buy also expires 2026. They jettison DLo and Gabe - both of whom are playing poorly right now and snag a hustle big with LAL connections to boot. IMO they need to trade DLo as the alternative is letting him walk for nothing or signing him to a deal that almost certainly will go longer than CJ - this is a great hedge to improve on court play while not fussing up the salary come summer 2026.

I think NOP would just cut out Portland and try to add a little more sweetner to dump Vincent somewhere for an expiring. Go into next season and make a decision to keep Ingram or have close to max cap space. I think that would be a more likely path than just jumping on that Ayton contract. Give Missi the year to see what they have and address center in the offseason if need be. Even if they elect to keep Ingram, they could have the full MLE to explore someone like Sharpe, Lopez, or Capela.

Is CJ that much better than Dlo?
And is he worth payign an extra 11m for?
That Gabe contract could be used for another role guy
His RPM is lower than DLO's this year, but I believe higher last year. Obviously a small sample this year and CJ has been hurt
CJ does have some more injury concerns vs Dlo now too

Don’t see the point for la. Dlo as expiring is better to hold on to use in a trade with first rounders to get a good player not someone who doesn’t move the needle

I'm not high on Ayton at all, but he has more value than CJ. Pels owe more

I think CJ would be a really good fit in the Lakers. He'd provide a solid shooter for crunch time shots. And hed be one of those veteran additions that brings a lot of intangibles that elevate a playoff team.

Lakers easily prefer Dlo shooting, play making and contract over CJ.
Lebron is going to dominate the ball. Lakers just need spot up shooters offensively. Hard to justify a 33 million dollar spot up shooter.

He is a better shooter than Dlo (who is solid, but CJ is elite/closest you can be to elite) and more consistent. Assuming higher IQ
But he is older, more injury issues, more expensives, not as good of a playmaker, and shorter than Dlo. Also somehow gets less fta than Dlo, who barely shoots any
My main issue/question is the fit.
Can we close games with Reaves and CJ in the backcourt? Defensively seems not good enough

CJ is a better shooter btw.
Looked up catch and shoot since 2019 and every year CJ has shot it better and on more volume
But he is a guy who I trust to close games offensively....the question is the defense
Going to be likely be too tough for CJ and Reaves to close games together

I don't watch the Lakers, but when I pulled recent scouting reports and stats, it looks like Dlo is not a good defender? CJ will never be all NBA, but he's definitely improved his effort on that end. I think he might be an upgrade.
As far was fit and closing out games, again, I agree that CJ is not a pure PG, never has been. But, the question is, would LeBron make up the difference as a creator?
CJ would be lethal in the mid range to deep shooting game. How much does an upgrade in shooting and defense (slight) help?

The trade board loves to think the Blazers are just going to outright dump DA, Simons and Grant.
You guys can devalue the contracts, I get that. But you don’t realize it’s 2024 where complete scrubs are getting near max.
Well let all these guys walk before taking these types of deals.

Good point there. Cj is the better shooter. Offensively i feel like CJ skill set would be under used on the lakers.
