Basically Spurs cash in future picks to bring back an All Star level guard signed on a good deal for five years. Boston receives extra compensation for taking Collins as well.

Seems fair, who says no?

No way a young team like San Antonio gives up four 1st round picks for Derrick White.

Knicks gave up FIVE firsts, a swap, a second & Bojan for Bridges… is White not better than Mikal Bridges?

It was pretty unanimous here that this was a large overpay, so I don't see the relevance.

Even if you assume that was "fair" value, the Knicks were coming off a second-place finish in the conference and ready to compete now. San Antonio is still a couple years off, at which point White will be past his prime.

I don't hate the idea of San Antonio consolidating their assets for the right player, but White isn't the right player.

Probably not, because those four firsts could also be traded for a player that fits their timeline better. I like Derrick White and was very insistent that Boston got great value in trading for him, but even if he is worth this I don't think this is the right deal.

Dude, probably a single one of those picks (unprotected best of) is worth more than the entire package the Knicks sent for Bridges (at the time of the trade).

Spurs fans love Derrick White, but I don't think you'll see this big of a return. If the Celtics are trying to lower payroll, I would imagine they'd move on from Holiday (34) before White (30) - no?

I think it comes down to how the Spurs view their timeline. With Duncan, SAS made the Finals in his second season with the veteran core, then they retooled and had the 2nd era with prime TD, Tony & Manu. Lastly they retooled again with young Kawhi, Diaw, Danny Green etc for 2013-14. So SAS generated THREE distinct championship eras … HOWEVER TD was a four year college player, and maybe SAS looks at Vic as being 3-5 yrs away from the start of his window, and Derrick White is 30 yrs so would not fit with that timeline. I don’t know

Boston is 10-3. Why would they get rid of a significant contributor?

It’s entirely about the money. If they do a deal like this, they can move Zach Collins plus a draft capital for a cheaper guard, or simply waive and stretch Collins. Celts are just too far over budget with repeater taxes.

San Antonio has 12 actual firsts. One is top 14 protected from Charlotte this year. Another is top 10, and then top 8 protected from Chicago. You're dealing one of the protected picks, and then 3 others, leaving them with 8 left, and one well protected pick this year that is likely to turn into 2nds, leaving them with just 7 real 1sts (and other swap rights).

I don't think they have the vast inventory you think they do? And I don't think that SA would be ready to kickstart their competing. They're AWFULLY young.

And all that doesn't even address why Boston would be willing to make a major step back in competing right now. Derrick White is key to that.

I think both teams say no.

Spurs for extreme overpay and timeline reasons.

Boston because they're title favorites and their payroll this season isn't really a problem. Next summer is when I'd expect the salary triage moves to start for Boston, not during this season.

In this deal, SA keeps all draft capital for loaded 2025 draft. In 2026, they deal the better of ATL/SA, probably 5-20. The Chicago first is 50-50 to convey or convert to a second. In 2030, the pick could be anything, best of three teams five years out, each have a top 15 player on the roster right now who will still be in their prime in five years. And then one single unprotected MInny pick in 31, six years out. Could be #1 overall, could be #30. It’s a long time from six drafts from now.

EDIT: SA could counter with 2nd best of 2026 and/or 2nd best of 2030 if you are worried the bottom falls out and SA wants protection they don’t end up sending out two top 3 picks in the most unlikely worst case scenario

lots of argument around the Spurs, but irrelevant. Boston isn't trading a key player as they look to defend a title. They gave out all those contracts knowing what it was going to cost. Maybe after the season they try and pare down, but they are going to try and repeat.

Honestly, likely yes. But you have to explore all the angles and White would return more in trade for three reasons. One, younger. Two, better contract. Three, generates more regular season expected wins.

It would be KP, no? The showed they could win without him last year. And his health makes him always a question mark. No question he raises the ceiling, but they are already a championship level team without him. He would be the first payroll cut I'd imagine.
