Challenge: Get Trey Murphy on the Kings

With a core of Fox, DeRozan, Murray, and Sabonis, I ask myself what is the best fitting piece to round out the starting unit (knowing Monk is our 6th man off the bench)?

We can simply add a 3&D SG like Keon Ellis to the lineup but then that gives us a very undersized frontcourt of DeRozan, Murray, and Sabonis. Considering Murray has actually shown to be a really good defender against SGs (and even some PGs), I think it would be beneficial to start him at SG on defense. Offensively, DeRozan can be the SG considering he’s a really good ball handler and passer. This would then allow us to add a bigger/longer 3&D PF to give us a lot of size and length around Sabonis.

Enter Trey Murphy.

He’s got good size & length at PF. And he reportedly may have grew since he was measured at the combine. He measured 6’7.5” w/o shoes and 6’9.25” w/shoes, but watching him on the floor, I wouldn’t be surprised if he’s 6’10” or 6’11” in shoes now. He’s also a very good and versatile defender which will be important around DeRozan and Sabonis. Lastly, he’s an excellent volume shooter which will be important considering how paint/midrange heavy Fox, DeRozan, and Sabonis. I don’t know if having just a decent 3PT shooter next to these guys would be enough. We’d still have the advantage of having a player with Huerter’s gravity out on the floor but we’d be taller, longer, more athletic, and a better defensive team.

So with that said…how do we get Trey Murphy on the Kings while keeping the core I previously mentioned intact (Fox, Monk, DeRozan, Murray, and Sabonis)? I would think it would have to at least be centered around Devin Carter, but it’s hard to gauge what NOP would want, what direction they want to go in, etc.

I think NO just doesn’t really want to deal Murphy as he’s the reason they’d let Ingram walk.

And, contractually, it’s tough anyway as he extended early, so he’s a poison pill guy.

If SAC wants Murphy, the conversation starts with Murray.

This is the correct answer.

“Give me your valuable young guy without touching any of our valuable players” is not a useful premise for a thread.

I guess we value Devin Carter and Keon Ellis differently?

Murray and Murphy are very similar players/archetypes. I see trading Murray for Murphy as, more or less, a lateral move.

He's not for sale and he can't be traded this year even if he was

Certainly Keon. He's just seen as a team's project utility player.

Devin hasn't stepped on the court to be in the discussion yet

Probably. Carter hasn't played an NBA game and the last thing New Orleans needs is another small guard. He is also a member of a very bad draft class, so it's not clear that his value is similar to a lottery pick in any other recent draft. Add to it that he is old, and has a questionable shot. It could work, it could be Davion Mitchell. Ellis is also nice, 3+D player ... but Murphy clearly can scale higher with his scoring than either of these guys. I don't think there is a workable deal without Murray.

Why can’t he be traded?

Murphy doesn't really make sense. I mean of course he does for Sac, but Pelicans are clearly viewing him as a star piece for the future. He is worth more than Murray.

The realistic target is Herb Jones. And honestly I'm not sure we have what it takes. But looking at the Pelicans roster if they do a semi-rebuild. It probably starts with Dejounte - Hawkins - Murphy - Zion.

But what do the Kings have to offer? Lyles + Carter + 1st? Feels like too much.

As a practical matter, it's nearly impossible due to the PPP and available cap space league wide.

Lyles, Carter and a 1st feels like too much?

I think the more reasonable target here is a guy like Isaiah Stewart? He's having his best season protecting the rim. He isn't shooting 3s this year for some reason, but he has done it in the past with okay results.

Probably the best you could hope with that package is Patrick Williams from the Bulls.

Maybe Huerter and a pick can do it?

So you’re saying he CAN be traded?

Carter was just a lotto pick, Kings currently slated for a top 11 pick and declining. We have Herb worth more than two lotto 1sts?

Not all firsts are created equal. Carter has yet to play a game and was a lotto pick in a weak draft.

Would you trade Keegan Murray for Carlton Carrington, Richaun Holmes and a first?

As a Kings fan...definitely not these two lotto picks. Any team would be insanely happy if one of their two middling firsts turns out to be guy who can defend 1-4 at DPOY level, shoot threes and even control the ball somewhat. If Monte decides that he HAS to save this roster, I could be persuaded to understand throwing two unprotected future firsts+salary match in useless players at Herb (with a second trade to shore up the frontline size/depth issues), and I'm not sure the Pels would even consider it.

Herb isn't the 2 way player that Keegan has been. I'm not saying that package is worth murphy. Herb has 1 respectable shooting year under his belt and has been a wing defender. Maybe he continues to progress and build off last years shooting.
