NOP/MIN

A weird but simple swap of seemingly unwanted but talented vets

MIN trades Julius Randle
NOP trades Brandon Ingram

Two teams swap expiring "stars" that don't likely have much of a trade market, and see if grass is actually greener on the other side.

For the Pels, this is likely a precursor to a Zion trade, or you can keep him on a minute restriction. in a [seemingly mythical] healthy Pels rotation, this opens all the wing minutes you could want Murphy/Jones to have, and ensure you're not completely without an offensive interior presence without Zion in action.

For the Wolves, Randle is very predictably, not a great fit, and the Wolves opt for a long wing instead. Try to work the magic with Conley/Ant/BI/McDaniels/Gobert + Dillingham/DDV/Naz off the bench

Doesnt make sense for the Pels. Ingram has many warts, but worth more

Just makes no sense with Zion there and even if Zion is traded this season is likely lost so no point in trading for the expiring Randle. Better just to get an draft asset for Ingram and reevaluate in the offseason.

Ingram makes more than Randle. The apron prevents MIN from taking back more salary than they send out.

Yeah I'd want something that helps me beyond this season too. Doesn't have to be a pick or young player though. If they want to just have a one year dip and try again with Zion next year, flip BI for a veteran that fits on a longer deal. Note: I wouldn't do that personally, but its an option.

But just another expiring guy that doesn't make sense to give another contract to? I don't really see the point for this year. Is Randle supposed to lift them that much more than BI does?

No1 wants Randle, not Minny not anyone else. Randle is everything Pelicans fans hate about Ingram and more...

Doesn't work for either team.

Yep. I think OP is just deflecting from the eventual Ingram (or Zion) to Hornets trade :D

I like Randle on the GRIZZLIES...(like a modern version of Zach Randolph) I feel like he complements his frontcourt players very well and could use his size and playmaking...(worst case scenario probably expires). Randle/Naw for Clarke/Smart... Wolves put a former DPOY next to Edwards + a backup at the solid 5 (then move Donte for depth in the forward spot)

This is an old comp for Randle that pretty much falls flat after you get past them both being physical and left handed players.

With Randle being in a contract year and vying for a real long term role, do the Grizzlies play JJJ at the 5 permanently? What does this do to Edey's role? If Randle doesnt fit then he'll mess up this year's chemistry. Not sure if it's a winning move for Memphis.

This post would be better as its own thread. For those wondering, this is a legal trade, because MIN can do it without aggregating. Smart + Clark for Randle, and TPE for NAW.

I can see Memphis looking to consolidate. With so many young players, it would get too expensive to keep them all.

I’m not sure I like the additional $34 mil in salary next year for MIN - it might cost them Naz Reid. I also have Randle ($33, $30.9 likely declined PO) > Smart ($20.2, $21.6j, and NAW ($4.3) > Clarke ($12.5, $12.5, $12.5). MIN would probably need a legitimate center included to solve their biggest problem, like Aldama or Huff if MIN could wait until the end of January when he is trade eligible.
