Offers for Scary Terry

Post#1 » by ThaFranchize84 » Mon Dec 16, 2024 1:42 am

The Heat may or may not shop him at the deadline. Wanted to see what teams out there could use a player like Terry. The Heat obviously have some sunk cost giving up a lottery protected first to get him last trade deadline. With Herro’s development and the continued success of finding undrafted guards (Dru Smith) the Heat might be open to dealing him. He can be a streaky bench scorer on a contender or a great tank commander on a lottery team.

His contract is as follows:

This year: $24.9

Next season: $26.6

The Heat would ideally not like to take any future money after the 25-26 season unless it for a major upgrade. They could use a younger frontcourt floor spacer. I personally would like to see John Collins so three teams deals are probably the easiest option. Another option is a younger taller wing to pair next to Herro.

Any teams out there potentially interested? Magic? Back to Charlotte? Lakers?

Just curious to see what a potential market could be?

Probably a negative contract. His numbers are pretty pedestrian for his pricetag and he's never been a tough defender.

I definitely will not disagree with you. Just curious to see how negative of a contract or what if any assets a team might be willing to move.

One of the 5 worst contracts in the league, but ai think still can be moved. My thought was to aggregate him with some filler and a protected first or Jovic, and/or 2nds for CJ McCollum. He is at least a good player.

Most thought it was an overpayment by Miami, his play since that has only reinforced that notion. I don't think he is a starter on a good team and makes too much for a 6th man. Tough sell. Likely has to go in a package for another guy whose value is considered negative.

Lakers.... Rather just stick with DLo.

Maybe something like Cole Anthony/G Harris for Rozier could have legs. Orlando picks up a needed scorer for relatively cheap.

Maybe the spurs want a little more bench offense and have seen enough of Barnes. Barnes/small contract/2nd for Rozier?

I considered it an understandable overpay at the time. Miami was struggling coming off a finals run with an aging team. Offense was a major problem. I thought Miami’s core earned the right to have more investment into it.

In terms of value, Dennis Schroeder was just traded for 3 2nds and an expiring. Miami should feel lucky if they got the same value.

I think it would be pretty easy to name ten contracts worse than his. The Heat had no business giving up a 1st for him, but he'd be the best guard on a team like the Lakers.

Going through the list, there are actually more bad contracts than I thought, but I'd still have him very high:

Definitely worse:
1. Kawhi
2. Beal
3. George
4. LaVine
5. Poole

Maybe worse b/c of health:
Embiid
J. Murray
Zion

Maybe worse:
Ayton
Barrett
Draymond
Grant

I think I have him 8th, behind Ayton and RJ.

Rozier could make sense as a spacing 1 for Lebron/Davis. A D-Lo/Vincent for Rozier/Ware concept is about $113K off in the trade checker, but has the makings of something. Would think Miami would need to send a few seconds at least to sweeten it.

I don't see us trading Ware just to move Rozier.

I think that trade without Ware is a little interesting. Rozier and Dlo get a change in environment that could help their game, and Vincent gets to return to where he played his best ball.

Kuzma (3 years) for Rozier (2 years) + JJ (3 years).

Wizards cut longterm money, add a prospect.

Heat upgrade with a win-now player in Kuzma who fits the same timeline as Herro & Bam. With Butler, Heat have 4 nice scoring options for a playoff push.

Lol! No, not including JJJ for Kuzma. He's just not a Heat guy.

I feel like Miami would have to add value at that point and I'm just not sure what I'm comfortable giving to make the move.

I don't blame you, but this proposal serves as a model of the cost of unloading Terry for an upgrade. Heat would have to attach 1st round pick or stable prospect. Heat owe next two firsts to Thunder and Hornets.

So, most likely attachment to Terry to move his contract in a win-now move is a player, instead of draft capital. And you have to find a contract where the player earns less than Terry because the Heat are over the apron.

I don’t think the Heat will be that desperate to move Terry to have to attach an asset to move him. I think if they can move him and take back less future money and a serviceable player(s) that would be ideal. I proposed the Lakers deal a few weeks back (DLo and Gabe). I think that could work for players that might need a chance of scenery. I also would would look at Utah and John Collins but I don’t think Utah needs a guard like Terry so it would have to be a 3 team deal. I also thought of the Orlando deal (Anthony, Harris and a small asset). Outside of Collins these deals opens up some future money in case Jimmy leaves this offseason to spend the entire MLE and stay below the second apron.

There's little to no evidence that Kuzma is a win-now player. He can take a lot of shots on meh efficiency, but that's about it.

Yeah this is pretty much spot on. He's a small 2 guard who doesn't really offer much beyond scoring a bit at mediocre efficiency. He's not a PG and he's not a good defender. Ideally he's a bench gunner but $25M a year for 2 years is a lot to pay for a guy to fill that role.

Dlo/Vincent or Cole Anthony/Gary Harris are probably the best you're getting, and at that point you might as well just keep Terry.

I mean you make complete sense. It costs to move Terry and the Heat do not want to pay to do it.

Your proposal for D'Angelo Russell & Gabe Vincent looks feasible. I guess the Heat are making a lateral move here based strictly on finances while the Lakers are hoping to catch twilight lightning in a bottle with Terry as the sun begins to set on him. He has the lowest FG% in the whole Heat system, or next lowest.

I have Vincent at least as negative on his deal as Rozier is on his. Rozier can still get hot and is not easy to guard when he is. While he's not a PG, his handle is good enough to take over primary ball handling duties.

Vincent has been flat out bad since going to L.A. if he didn't shoot well above his average from outside during that improbable Finals run (where he was essentially unguarded), he never gets that contract.
