Cheap (or Blah) Backup 4 for Dallas

Post#1 » by daoneandonly » Mon Dec 16, 2024 1:02 pm

Merry almost Christmas all

I dont think Dallas should make any big moves and let the core build more chemistry as best as they can. But they do have a hole at the backup 4 as evident by their porous record & play when PJ Washington sits and Kleber being made of glass

I'm not expecting a world beater, as the team shouldn't trade any of the key pieces, but what PF could they get for any of these guys (or a combination of them)?

Dante Exum
Markieff Morris
Dwight Powell
Maxi Kleber
Jaden Hardy (if he's eligible to be traded this season, I don't believe he is)

Don't think he's worth any draft capital and he's kind of short for a PF

Yabusele has been suggested on our board and I think he would be a very solid addition.
2025 Philly 2nd should be enough especially if they are looking to tank.

What salary range are you looking at?

Are you looking for RS help only, or need someone who is good enough to play in the play-offs if PJ is injured?

Given the players you listed aren't really enticing, what, if any, draft compensation are you willing to offer?

May end up being the only viable course. WHo would get released to open up said spot? I'd imagine Markieff, but the team made it a point to re-sign him for some reason.

This seems like the right answer. Blah backups don't typically merit surrendering draft picks, although we do tend to overrate teams' attachments to second rounders, which are sold and traded on the regular.

i think you have to salary dump someone to open up room under apron to bring a buyout guy in. cant just release someone

Only somewhat. Dallas has a high 2nd round pick due to Philly's surprising collapse. There are a couple teams with some cap space that could/would eat 2.5 months of exum for the 36th pick in the draft

As sad as it makes me as a long-time SloMo fan, it looks like he might be the odd man out as Kerr is tightening up his rotations.

Would love to find a way to get Kleber but would ultimately probably settle for Powell/Exum just to clear the cap room for next year and get some additional big man depth.

Just sign Paul Reed for that role, no need to squander asset.

Than Mavs can look too upgrade with some combination of Maxi, Powell, fillers, 1st and 2nds (Maxi to Clippers for PJ Tucker to clear additional year) - DFS, Dosunmu, etc. - or just keep 2025 1st and 76ers likely early 2nd to add two prospects in deep draft - they can always be used in the trade later on, or developed.

by the deadline the prorated amount due Exum or Morris is low enough Dallas can trade cash ensuring a team a bit of profit for waiving them for Dallas. That shouldn't be a major hurdle.

I haven’t watched a Portland game in a year. But you ccoukd look at Walker for Exum and a distant 2nd or Dallas’ 2nd this year? Walker’s shooting stats don’t look good at all this year, but he looked decent last year..

Is Nico Batum a guy Dallas could get with any of the guys mentioned above?

For a price with trade pieces, you should check on Nance Jr or Bobby Portis. The bucks were considering getting rid of him when things were going bad.

Nico Batum would not be worth a FRP unless some albatross contract is going out. Some may consider Maxi that. I don't think the deal is big enough to warrant that.

No argument form me that Batum has more value than a guy like Exum, but a FRP is just way over the top.
