Who wants/needs Capela?

Post#1 » by jayu70 » Tue Dec 17, 2024 4:33 pm

Things to consider:
Hawks are looking for a 'rotation upgrade' - preference would be to get a Center back.
Hawks would most likely be willing to include the Kings 2025 1st (lottery protected top 12 and 10 for the next 2 years).
Hawks are adverse to paying the Luxury Tax. So long term high salary for next season wouldn't be preferred.

That's a good thought. He's probably available, though likely won't be cheap.

Depending on how much value ATL is willing to add, Capela + picks to Utah for Sexton + Kessler would be interesting as well.

I doubt either Brooklyn or Utah considers dealing their young center unless the Laker '25 pick is in discussion. That would at least get them to answer the phone.

I think the implication is that the upgrade would be at guard.

Hou would likely have interest with some combo of Adams / Landale / Tate and at minimum 2+ seconds

Not sure if we’d do our 2025 LP first, but maybe. Depends on how the FO views the situation at backup C. How valuable they’d feel Clint would be going forward. If we couldn’t just attempt to nag him or a similar player with a full MLE in the off season without giving up a pick, etc.

For ATL, if the goal is an upgrade, this would need to be a 3 team deal.

How do you come to that conclusion?

Logic, mostly. Everyone's favorite aggregator would've just used the word "starter" if that's what he meant.

But also because Okongwu/Nance/Barlow is 'good enough' for the current state of the team to allow them to focus on other gaps. The most glaring one is the lack of a competent shot creator and/or facilitator behind Trae.

Claxton & DFS is about the same salary as Capela & Nance.

I am not sure what Atlanta can give Brooklyn to make this happen though.

I think Brooklyn would prefer the 2027 NOP first rounder.

The picks from DJM trade...

If the Hawks make that offer we will find out just how much the Nets believe in Nicolas Claxton.

Capela plus nance for CJ McCollum.
NO dumps the extra year of CJ salary.

1. Leaves Atlanta without size - Hawks need more size and defense not less.
2. What's the cost for NOP to dump that extra year. Hawks won't want that salary for next year.

This feels like the best/simplest option. Won't get Chicago the big value return some fans are hoping for (I'd expect Atlanta to add 2nd(s)) but at least starts the move on plan. Atlanta takes on salary into next season but not longer.

If ATL is willing to put those picks up - lots of options.
2025 first round draft pick from L.A. Lakers.
2025 first round draft pick from Sacramento: Sacramento's 1st round pick to Atlanta protected for selections 1-12 in 2025 and 1-10 in 2026; if Sacramento has not conveyed a 1st round pick to Atlanta by 2026, then Sacramento will instead convey its 2026 2nd round pick and 2027 2nd round pick to Atlanta.

BKN - Claxton not available until January 16 but works well.
Could do simple version Capela and firsts just for Claxton or get DFS also.

WAS could work. JVal has to be available.
Nance and a pick for JVal.
Capela, Nance and picks for JVal and Kuzma.
Capela, Nance, Bogdanovic, those two firsts for Kuzma, JVal, Brogdon.

DET: Stewart for Bogdan
- I think Bogdan is a negative for most teams but DET could actually use him.

Or - some wild combo:
WAS gets - Capela, Nance, 2025 LAL first
DET gets - Bogdanovic, couple of 2nds from ATL
ATL gets - Kuzma, JVal, Stewart

I'd imagine both sets of players cost about the same, so it is a matter of who fits better for ATL. I'd guess it is Claxton, TBH, but Quin does love his big boy centers.

Poeltl seems like a good option. His passing would help him fit in, he is a defensive anchor ... Capella + SAC 1st for Poeltl? Cuts a little salary ... maybe loop Detroit in as a third team to take some salary from Toronto.
