Portland will likely need to pay to get rid of Ayton. And if they don't want to pay, they can keep Ayton (and his poor attitude and his contract).

I personally think that Achuiwa and Robinson, when healthy, provide more than Ayton on the court. Yes, the "when healthy" element is worrisome, but I'd much rather run with those two than trade both (or frankly either without draft compensation) for Ayton.

IMO Robinson is a significantly better fit with KAT than Ayton is - and a better player overall. Even with the health concerns for Robinson I don't see this as more than a push for the Knicks even if you ignore salary (Ayton's health advantage roughly countering Robinson's higher quality when healthy). Including salary and it's bad for the Knicks (and probably not CBA legal).

POR is not paying to move Ayton.

If no one wants him (I don’t!) he can move on when his contract expires.

The fear is that Cronin will re-sign him.

A yes for Portland, and another that is nowhere close to a legal trade.

The math ain't math'ing again. Ayton makes $34M. The Knicks are above the first apron. They can't take in more salary than they send out.

We’re close to a season and a half in and his attitude has not been an issue. By all accounts he gets along with others. He doesn’t bring the energy and veteran mentorship somebody would hope for, and that is just about the only thing you could say negative about his attitude. So more of a neutral attitude.

The contract is negative, but Blazers aren’t in a position to give up assets to offload him, so it will probably either be some team swapping similar contracts for players at different positions or Portland just holding onto him for 1.5 seasons, which is not a big deal for a rebuilding team.

Ayton makes $34m. The NY package combine for $22.237m. Since NY is only $580k form the hard cap at the second apron, NY ABSOLUTELY needs to send out more salary than they take back to make this legal. And NY will need enough room under the second apron to be able to backfill these roster spots to get back up to 14. At that point, NY has to add in Josh Hart, or a higher salary (KAT, OG, Brunson, or Bridges) to make a swap like this legal.

You’re just way off from even being a possibility.
