Denver Depth Dilemma

The elephant in the room in Denver is their lack of depth. They're basically playing an 8-man rotation.

There's been rumors of them looking at LaVine - and while LaVine and say someone like Craig could help - is this really addressing the primary issue?

One issue is the Nuggets don't have much to trade - Michael Porter Jr seems to be getting dangled as their trade asset. They have some young players with probably greatly varying value team to team, and a 2031 1st which is pretty far away.

The big hold up reportedly on the LaVine trade was the Nuggets needing to send more money back in a LaVine trade but the Bulls not wanting any of those contracts (mainly Nnaji).

I think the Nuggets should go the other way - trade MPJ for multiple lower cost contracts.

Idea 1: Nuggets & Nets

Nuggets in: Bojan Bogdanovic, Dorian Finney-Smith, Shake Milton, and Day'Ron Sharpe

Nets in: Michael Porter Jr, Hunter Tyson, Vlatkoa Cancar, and Jalen Pickett

Nuggets get the depth they're looking for - Bogdanovic can be the MPJ replacement, then they're adding additional forward depth in DFS, guard depth in Shake, and Sharpe can potentially better hold down the non-Jokic minutes than what they're getting now.

For the Nets - the future salary might cause them to turn it down, but whatever they're hoping to do in free agency - is it better than a 26 year old MPJ?

Idea #2: Nuggets and Jazz

Nuggets in: Collin Sexton, Jordan Clarkson, Drew Eubanks, and Svi Mykhailiuk

Jazz in: MPJ, Dario Saric, Hunter Tyson and Vlatkoa Cancar

Again - Nuggets are adding multiple depth pieces for one player (MPJ) who currently even plays going out.

Thoughts on any of these ideas? More importantly if you were trying to trade MPJ for multiple pieces what trade would you be looking to make?

Hypothetical: Does Denver want to turn MPJ into Randle? Obviously MPJ ends up on a 3rd team.

Umh no. Sexton, Westbrook and Clarkson coming of the bench sounds awful, I really think that is very bad fit. And 1st idea, I mean Milton is done for this season so I don't think they want that contract for nothing. Flip Bogdanovic, Milton and Sharpe for Johnson and there could be something.

Also wouldn't hate to get Santi Aldama or Nikola Jović as backup PFs, but they won't get them for cheap.

I don't think so, Randle - Gordon - Jokic doesn't appeal attractive both ofensively and defensively.

Portland/Denver have done a lot of business together over the years

Is there any chance the two teams can cut a deal that helps Denver with its depth issues?

Don't think so. Problem with Denver is lack of tredable assets. Right now Murray is problem. He signed contract extension so he can't be traded. Other starters are more then fine, and they won championship with them 2 years ago.

On bench only bigger contract is Nnaji and nobody want him. Of tredable picks only one is avilable, 2031 1st. If you include it in trade it has to be unprotected or lightly protected because if it falls into protection it stays in Denver. It can't be replaced with 2032 first or 2 seconds because those picks can't be included in trade now.

Player that would help Denver (in teory) is RWIII. He is injury waiting to happen. I don't think Denver would give 2031 1st for him. Problem with him is he can only play C, which means he will play 15 minutes in rs as Jokic's backup and 10 minutes in POs. Is it the best use of 12 mil on payrole? I would prefer player that can play backup PF and C as Santi Aldama behind Jokic and AG.

Also in hipotetical trade for RWIII, Nnaji has to be included. Is it best deal for Portland?

So maybe in 3 team trade if we could get Duop Reath I wouldn't mind, don't know how we could get him or how much he would help.

RW3 for Nnaji and a 2030 swap seems like a good swing for Portland.

Add in Reath for depth

Or something like:

Nnaji, 2030 swap (top 10 prot), 2031 1st for RW3, Reath, Toumani Camara

Yeah I played around with something like....

Denver in: Avdija, Robert Williams, and Thybulle

Portland in: MPJ, Holmes, Cancar

But just wasn't sure it worked. They get center depth, Thybulle can fill that bruce brown role they've been missing, then it's can Avidja step in enough on offense for MPJ.

I agree with your premise, but I think even saying they have an eight man rotation is generous.

Like the Suns, this is a problem of having too much money locked into starters. I suppose as a GM last summer, you could cling to all four to start the season, and hope that you could find legitimate complimentary pieces with tiny salaries and late round picks. But if this is all the production you can get out of them with freakin’ Jokic on the floor for big minutes, setting them up, a change is necessary.

I think they need to get off a big salary. Obviously not Jokic, no one wants Murray with the extension, and Aaron Gordon is too vital to what they do. To get rotation-level players, I think they need to break Michael Porter Jr into 2-3 legitimate nba players

Not so much second one. If Denver could get RW3, no need for Reath, I especialy wouldn't add 2031 1st. About Camara, Denver already has Watson and Strawther to develope. One cheap vet wing would be OK, no need for new young wing player.

MPJ is among best scoring 3rd options in the league. You have Beal, Porzingis, PG13 and DDR there. After DDR trade, Sacramento is playing like **** so cut him. He never made any team better. People are underrating MPJ a lot here. Avdia (who I love a lot) is not close to him as scorrer.

Trade that maximizes DEN window and provides depth is…

Lavine Craig Carter

For

MPJ Saric Jordan Strawher and 2031 1st. DEN will insist on NNaji and AK will cave.

Why would Portland give away such a young player on an amazing contract in Avdija to take on MPJ’s expensive and risky contract? This is lacking some serious compensation for Portland to consider.

Portland isn’t taking on those years of Nnaji for a Top-10 protected swap in 2030. I would rather let RWIII expire than make that move.

Remove the protections, or make it like Top-4 protected, and I could come around to it.
