Is it time for Randle to the Mavs?

Post#1 » by Toine85 » Fri Dec 27, 2024 4:56 am

With Luka out with what seems to be a long-term injury, would now be the time to trade PJ Washington, Klay, and either Dinwiddie or Markieff for Randle (Minny would then waive Ingles and Dozier)?

Dallas gets an inside scorer with Kyrie and Luka. Everyone said Luka and Kyrie would not work out because they were both too ball dominant, but nobody says that anymore.

Minny brings in Klay back to where his dad was a college star. And surrounds Ant with a ton of depth at all positions.

Uh no. Despite him being from Dallas it makes no sense to gut depth and trade their best defensive forward for a guy with limited utility when Luka returns. This is why you trade for Kyrie.

This is an idea been suggested forever and there were times it made sense (post Brunson, pre Kyrie maybe), but definitely not now. Dallas doesn't need to weaken their ability to compete in the playoffs to get through a month of games without Luka. Very short-sighted.

PJ Washington absolutely, Klay no chance in the world (third team maybe?) Dinwiddie I could see that. I think this might need to be expanded a bit to make the money work, (I still don’t know if Spotrac is reliable when it comes to 2nd apron teams, and I don’t know if any other trade checkers are even functional,) but there might be something there.

I don’t necessarily disagree. I do need to ask though, are you sure it is only a month?

Nope. That was the original projection, but some reporting today suggests he will miss less time. But he could be out for the year and Dallas shouldn't make this trade. Not sure Randle even makes the team better than PJ/Klay/Dinwiddie(who is in the rotation now and would obviously have a bigger role post-Luka so he's not a throw in like the OP has him). But even if he wins them an additional RS game, they are less ready to compete in the playoffs. Plus next year when Luka would be back(Again in a worst case scenario) now you've lost PJ.

Randle needs to go to a team that only cares about making the playoffs, not worried about winning series. He can help you get there. Hes' been a huge playoff bust to date and nothing about his game suggests that's a fluke.

Again I am not really advocating for or against the trade. I would gladly take PJ for Randle and work on something for the other 2. I just cannot find good info on Luka, and it obviously affects this thread and any other Dallas related threads, so I thought I would ask. I do know that KAT missed half a season on a calf strain, others miss a couple weeks. It just depends on the grade and how it responds to treatment.

Apparently you get a motivated Julius Randle (23-10-8) if you get his mommy to come watch him.

https://www.cbssports.com/nba/news/luka-doncic-injury-update-mavericks-star-expected-to-miss-at-least-a-month-with-calf-strain-per-report/amp/

Not being reevaluated for four weeks suggests out longer (ramp up, restricted practice, ect…) Dallas is likely going to need to play without Luka until the deadline. That begs the question, what players if any are they willing to move and for what? I could see a 3 team deal making the Wolves and Mavs better. I could see DDV on the Mavs and starting at the SG in the role Klay was supposed to play. Randle bridging the scoring until Luka is back and then finding a role as a sixth man if Dallas has the stones to use him that way (we don’t and it pisses me off.) If you don’t like Portland there are other 3rd teams that have room and some interesting pieces. That said, the more you get from the Wolves the more it costs Dallas. I could see the Wolves being interested in PJ and Lively, and with a lot of young talent on the rise on the Wolves we can work things out for all 3 teams to win.

Dallas is not trading for Randle. The thought process is ludicrous. PJ Washington fits everything they need much better, and Klay is working himself into the chemistry. Dallas isnt helping Minny improve at their own expense.

The only Randle trade that I think makes any sense is if Irving wakes up and does a 360 and asks to be traded. And then maybe you send Kai to LAL and the asset(s) from LAL get divided between Dallas/Minn, but leaning in Dallas’ favor..

That’s Dallas downgrading the second option, but getting a bit younger..

But that takes Kyrie asking to be traded IMO.

I don’t think the fit makes sense at all though and wouldn’t include PJ in the offer. PJ is the forward you want with Luka and Kyrie. Not saying PJ is worth more than Randle (I think he is) but he is what Dallas neede.

Nah, zero interest in both DDV and Randle, especially if we have to give up PJ and Lively.
Even if Luka is out for the season, Mavs still have no reason to take the risk of trading for JR.

PJ was in the original deal I am responding to. Lively for DDV is on point. You get a terrific value deal (one of the best contracts in the NBA, especially starting with Kyrie and Luka,) and we get the C to replace Rudy when he ages out. Honestly take PJ and JR out of it for a minute, do you disagree with the relative value of DDV and Lively?

I don’t think you’ll find many/any that would take DDV over Lively.

Emphatically disagree I can admit im a biased Dallas fan so anyone who disagrees chime in, but I think most people outside of Minny would have value

PJ > Randle
Lively >>> DDV

Everything in your post favors Minny and makes Dallas much worse.

I thought you were going to say that if the Mavs lose a lot of games, Irving wakes up and demands a trade .. if DAL doesn’t get him a #2 scorer.

This feels very unlikely to me, but capricious Kyrie has left a trail of teams shocked by his self-motivated decisions, so I’ll never try to guess what that guy might do. The idea of “Randle as a short term scoring mercenary to a team with playoff goals” isn’t ridiculous. MIN themselves fit that definition if they knew they were trading Towns.

But while this is one of a million possible scenarios, I don’t want the Trade Board to start chasing trades where we say, “well, you’d do this deal if you were forced because your best player would demand to be traded, right?”

That said, it’s way too early, and I don’t like the price for DAL.

You know who has a better contract than DDV? Lively. Cheaper and with restricted rights at the end. Confused why you are citing contract as a reason to increase DDV's value compared to him.

Also Dallas is stuck with Klay. Forget value where we all agree DDV represents better value(assuming a return to form), how much better does Dallas get on court replacing Klay with DDV? Maybe half a win over a course of the season?

It just doesn't make sense for Dallas mate. PJ fits way better than Randle and Dallas has no replacement for what he brings. And Klay means there is no pressing need for DDV if the cost for what is at best is a marginal upgrade is their best defensive player who fits perfectly with Luka and is 20 years old.

I think Kyrie and Luka might want Dallas to trade for help. I don’t disagree with that idea. Even get to the point of demanding it maybe. And don’t think Dallas fans should slam the door on those ideas. It makes sense to try and save the season given Kyrie likely only has a couple truly elite seasons left.

But I think they both would want that help to be a player that can play with them both in a playoff series. And one that doesn’t cost the little depth Dallas has that fits with Luka/Kyrie unless it was worth it.

I love watching DAL play. During the Christmas game, I commented how fun it is to see the energy of PJ, Gafford and Lively, and that energy was instrumental to the Mavs beating the tired and injured Wolves in the WCF last season.

However, I think these guys tend to get over-valued on the trade boards because they have fit advantages that wouldn’t necessarily transfer over to a new team. With Luka and Kyrie on the floor, two of the best in the NBA at drawing defenses to them, it can create a lot of open looks for the complimentary players. Those two stars also cover up these players’ deficiencies, because it’s not necessary for them to have a more well-rounded game. We have already seen what PJ and Gafford look like on less talented teams.

If I’m the Mavs GM, I actually look to trade one of them. See if you can get another GM to salivate over how good they’ve looked on the Mavs. Maybe get a couple of decent young players (including a scorer), who could also get a big bump if they got to play in the DAL system with Kyrie and eventually Luka.
