So was just playing with Randle to Detroit. And realizing Det didn’t use their roomLe either this season.. So looks like they can add salary into that after using their cap space, I think? If I am wrong, you can send Moore to Washington or a fourth team and it’s still legal, so not really a deal breaker..

First I was using Kelly, since he can play with Rudy or Naz but ended up here..

Detroit: THJ, Simone, Toronto 2nd, 2028 2nd (they have 4?)
Detroit: Randle (and J. Davis into the roomMLE)

Detroit leverages their cap space to improve their team. Whether Randle stays two years or only this year - it feels worth it.

I can’t imagine Randle and Tobias Harris on the same team being a good thing. The fundamentals of the trade aren’t bad though

It’s legal. And maybe Minnesota feels it’s worth staying over the second apron? He will be a lot cheaper to keep next year and they probably wouldn’t be able to sign him without adding him now..

I was watching the Knicks vs the Magic game last night and the Magic reminded me of some the recent Knicks teams except to the extreme where they compete even harder, need offensive talents even more and their defense is better. Then I started to wonder if Mosley could get Randle to defend that hard. I know many Orlando fans want another guard to provide offense and creation but maybe Randle could be that guy even if it is from the bench.

My idea was based around KCP, Randle and Jonas

Minn out - Randle, Ingles
Minn in - Jonas, KCP

The Wolves break up Randle's contract into a back up center and vet wing that fits their defensive identity from last year and hopefully his shot comes around. He also seems like he would be a good vet to have around Edwards with their Georgia connection.

Orl out - KCP, M. Wagner
Orl in - Randle, Ingles

The Magic move Wagner's dead salary and KCP's 3 year deal for Randle. He would replace the offense lost from M. Wagner's injury in the second unit while adding some creation and someone to help carry the load while Paolo and Franz are out. There is overlap when the team is healthy but KCP was a bit redundant also.

Wash out - Jonas
Wash in - M. Wagner + some draft asset or young player

Washington picks up a minor asset for a big that is not a part of their future. I haven't put much thought into who needs to add more to make the deal happen.

Maybe KCP could work as part of your deal if the Magic decide they want to move on from his contract.

I think that if the Wolves don't get on track in the next 3-4 weeks this would be a really attractive deal. Cutting the payroll by $23M would save around $80M in luxury tax (meaning total payroll would be cut around $100M). A smaller benefit is getting a rotation caliber backup center, which would fill the teams biggest need. This would also guarantee that the Wolves would have the ability to re-sign Naz and NAW while staying under the 2nd apron for 2025-26.

I really don’t think Orlando would do their trade honestly. Why not just do the Washington trade and not risk egos/locker room noise about the role? Wouldn’t be a big role, but Jonas isn’t playing a big role now. At least he’d be playing a small role in the playoffs.

If Orlando does their deal, Minn stays really expensive but you have to love have NAW, Jaden and KCP. If it doesn’t just end up costing them NAW because ownership isn’t willing to stay over the second apron indefinitely (fair), I think they do it.

Yeah, i'm not sure if the Magic or the Wolves do it but the Magic are a team that could use some scoring and creation. I have thought Randle may be at his best on a good team in the Bobby Portis role off the bench rather than being relied upon constantly as a top 2 option or a clunky fitting 3rd option in the starting lineup. I just wondered if Mosley could get him to compete at a high level on both ends of the court. Mosley has seemed to do a good job of managing egos and personalities.

As a Knicks' fan I saw Randle compete at his hardest on the defensive end in year 1 with Thibs but I also saw how he could quit on that end and be completely toxic the next year on a struggling team. I would be more worried to add him to a young fragile Detroit team that hasn't exactly established an identity yet with a new coach than I would to add him to the Magic who seem to have at least established a defensive identity under Mosley the last few years and are winning despite the injuries. If it doesn't work out they haven't lost much.

For Minnesota it may be expensive but it could help them stay competitive this year hopefully while also giving them the flexibility to move NAW if they want while also not worrying as much about losing him in free agency. I'm not sure what the plan is with the Wolves and Randle but he may end up opting in to his contract next year if there isn't a market for him in free agency. KCP and Jonas would have an extra year on their deals but they still may be easier to move than Randle's if they want a little cap relief while picking up an asset or 2.

Conceptually, I could see MIN and DET as components of a larger deal.

DET has cap space that might be needed for MIN to make a deal over the second apron. MIN owns DET 2025 1st, prot 13/11/9 in 25/26/27. That’s a useful asset to reclaim, not just because of the pick, but because it opens up trade flexibility by avoiding Stepien, and making this or future picks, with whatever protections they choose, available in future trades. With DET’s recent rise, that’s an asset they should target.

Not sure what a deal would be, but there is some incentive there for the teams to work together. I’d look for deals that include DET getting that pick.
