The forbidden trade discussion: Jared McCain and Kenyon Martin Jr for a star?

Post#1 » by HadAnEffectHere » Sun Dec 29, 2024 2:08 am

Jared McCain definitely has star potential, but he may miss most of the rest of the year and is still a rookie who may be unprepared for the postseason. PG13 and Embiid have 0-2 prime years left so they're going to win a title... It's probably this year. So...

Will Morey take out a third mortgage and roll the dice that Embiid and PG13 can have one healthy postseason together this year?

This is a tough ask. I'm not sure there's a player who makes less than $12M who would materially improve the Sixers' chances over the next 3 postseasons that would be available for McCain and essentially filler (which is not a shot at McCain FWIW)

Think the better of 2026 Phil/OKC first is the first asset traded.. and then the 2028 Clipper first goes.. And then the the 2029 Philly/LAC first..

But if you find a player worth more than that - Philly probably considers it moving McCain.

Philly doesn't need *more* stars. They need healthy ones and the right roleplayers around them.

Most stars have contracts that aren't going to match that - they'll be making way too much.

You'd need a team willing to deal a rookie contract guy to make the money work. That's tough because if the player is actually good enough to be a big addition for Philly then they're probably a key long-term keeper for their current team as well - and if their current team will move them then how much are they helping Philly.

Maybe something with the Pels for Murphy or Jones?

Cam Thomas? Star in the absolute loosest sense, but it would at least get them 18ppg off the bench.

They just have very few salary matching once you remove the big 3 .

Herb was my first thought too. You’d have to add a minimum contract to McCain/KJ but that’s not a huge obstacle.

It only worked pre Markkanen extension when he had a 17 mill contract. I think even Utah would reconsider that now

This feels like a wild overpay for Philly.

I doubt it. We don't need another combo guard.

Would the Bulls do Coby White + multiple 2nds for McCain + 2 Philly 1sts + Martin JR? White is a free agent after next year so it defers risk for them. Pretty strong Philly team. Can cut Lowry out of the rotation and make White the 6th man 30 minute microwave scorer if you need to start Caleb Martin or Oubre against I guess the Knicks to get some wing size.

They obviously should. I'm sure White has a bit more value than McCain, but not THAT much.

Yeah, maybe McCain, Martin and a first and 2nds is enough? Chicago would keep their first if they start tanking hard enough, so maybe it makes more sense with a 2nd tank-y move like moving Lavine or Vucevic.

I think McCain and Martin + 2nd(s) to balance (no first), but I may be lower on McCain after 20 games than others.

I guess I'm higher on White than either you or the general vibe?
