ATL/LAL/UTA

ATL in: Walker Kessler, Collin Sexton, Jalen Hood-Schifino, Svi Mykhalliuk
LAL in: Deandre Hunter and Larry Nance
UTA in: D'angelo Russell, Jarred Vanderbilt, removed protections on 2027 LAL FRP, lightly protected 2029 LAL FRP, 2025 LAC SRP, 2025 MIN SRP

ATL gets their center of the future and a backup PG for Hunter and Nance. While Hunter is having a fantastic season, he does play a position that ATL has sufficient depth in (Johnson, Daniels, Risacher).

LAL gets a starting caliber wing that is in the midst of a career year and a versatile backup big.

Utah gets protections removed on a potentially valuable FRP, and another FRP from the post LBJ/AD era for their prospect center. They are compensated with seconds for taking on Vando.

Hunter is the Hawks best 3pt volume shooter and leader of the bench unit. He's carrying the bench, but also finishing games. Long, lengthy defensive wings around Trae is what the Hawks made a priority this season.

Is Atlanta turning Hunter into Kessler and Sexton?

This can’t be right.

Not bad. Not sure it moves the needle enough for LAL to make the move.

I don't see it for LA.

Lakers are giving up most of the value here to Utah and should prefer Kessler for themselves. If they are giving up draft compensation they want a guy who can be on the team long term which isn't older injury prone Nance. Hunter is having a nice bounce back season but the track record says he's also very injury prone and the Lakers already have enough injury concerns on the roster. They should be the ones getting Kessler + Sexton (to replace DLo). Not sure this is enough value for Ainge to move Kessler either. Short of getting into the same debate regarding Kessler's value it's obvious the Jazz value him closer to 2 FRPs if they move him at all.

I will also say that Kessler and Dyson Daniels in the same starting rotation isn't ideal for ATL either. It's very difficult to run a modern offense while having 2 non shooters playing heavy minutes together.

This is currently an issue with Capela/Dyson lineups, though Capela's minutes are being limited.
