Butler to Spurs, I don't care(with Nets)

Post#1 » by tcheco » Fri Jan 3, 2025 7:43 pm

Let's pretend Butler is ok with not getting an extension this year, and wants to prove something. Sees an oportunity to work with Pop, CP3 and Wemby and take a big franchise back to the playoffs and to make some noise.

Heat trade:
Butler
Love
Josh Richardson

Heat get:
Cameron Johnson
Keldon Johnson

Spurs trade:
Keldon Johnson
Zach Collins
Tre Jones
Spurs or Hawks 2025 first
Bulls 2025 first(protected top10 this year, top8 next year)

Spurs get:
Jimmy Butler
Kevin Love

Nets trade:
Cam Johnson

Nets get:
Zach Collins
Tre Jones
Josh Richardson
Spurs or Hawks 2025 first
Bulls 2025 first(protected top10 this year, top8 next year)

WHY:
Heat get under the tax this year, and get 2 cost controlled players locked in for 3 years at a good rate. They improve their depth for this year while keeping trade flexibility. Keldon's altough Keldon is around neutral value, his contract decreasing helps, specially if he manages to recover his 3pt shooting from 2021.

Herro/Rozier
Robinson/Burks
Keldon/JJJ/Pelle
Cam Johnson/Jovic
Bam/Ware

Spurs look to give up on the 2 extra picks they have that will probably outside of the top 10 to take a chance on Butler being more motivated playing with Pop and a great franchise and generational talent in Wemby. If they like what they see this year, they can either either extend him, or let him go and still have the cap space to sign free agents(Butler and Barnes expiring 70M cap figure just before having to pay Wemby)

CP3/Castle/Malaki/Wesley
Vassel/Castle/
Butler/Champagnie
Sochan/Barnes
Wemby/Love/Bassey

Nets get 2 picks for Cam Johnson while cutting a few extra millions next year.

I know people might not be too eager to get Butler with all the comotion right now, but he does know how to play basketball and carry his team to the finals not long ago. One could argue that maybe Spurs just add Cam Johnson, but I think they might be looking for a bigger move.

The Nets decline pretty hard here, and if the Heat want a Cam Johnson based deal, the Spurs don't need to be in it.

The Nets already have FOUR 2025 first round picks. Even for a team in an ultimate rebuild, SIX first round picks in one draft is too insane for anyone to consider.

But I would love to see it just for the sheer insanity of the idea.

This kills Miami's 2026 cap space. I like Johnson but I'm not sure we go for this.

If the Nets were to consider this a new home for either Collins or Claxton might be in order.

I am not sure the Nets would want both guys taking up cap space next year.

I wouldn't even make Butler an offer as a free agent, let alone pay for him. Spurs don't need to overpay for disgruntled 35 year olds who expect multi year max deals. Pass.
